Gilles Bourdouleix, wha \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twas the mayor of Cholet in the department of Maine-et-Loire from 1995 to 2008, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twas sentenced to a fine of 3000 Euro for his statements trivialising the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHolocaust against the Rroma. Therewith, the court of appeal of Angers confirmed \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe judgment of the criminal court, which had passed the sentence in January of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthis year, however this time not suspended. The judgment of the court reads: \u201cWith the public uttering in sufficiently \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\taudible voice to be perceived (…) his regret that the crimes against humanity \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tperpetrated by the German authorities during the Second World War towards the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttravellers were not committed long enough, the defendant has in fact made \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u200b\u200bsuch a glorification\u201d <\/em>(Del\u00e8ve 2014). The prosecutor, who viewed the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\toffense of glorification of crimes against humanity as proven, called for a \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tprison sentence of 6 months on probation. During a confrontation with \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttravellers that camped illegally on a field of his congregation, Bourdouleix \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tannounced: \u201cHitler may not have killed enough of them.\u201d According to his own \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstatement, the travellers had provoked him with the Hitler salute, which is \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlikewise punishable. A journalist of the newspaper \u201cLe Courrier de l’Ouest\u201d, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twho was present at the incident, wrote an article about the events and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpublished an audio recording of the statement on the newspaper\u2019s website. Bourdouleix \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdenied all allegations and threatened a lawsuit for defamation. The recording \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twas a manipulated montage, he stated. Bourdouleix\u2019 lawyer stated that they will \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tappeal to the court of cassation. Bourdouleix was forced to resign from the UDI \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tparty in response to his Holocaust trivialisation. The maximum penalty for the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tglorification of the Holocaust is five years in prison and a fine of 45,000 Euros. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBourdouleix was additionally sentenced by the court to pay the organisations La Ligue des droits de l’homme (LDH), \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMouvement contre le racisme et pour l’amiti\u00e9 entre les peuples (Mrap), la \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFondation pour la Memoire de la Deportation, la Licra <\/em>und la \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFondation nationale des d\u00e9port\u00e9s et intern\u00e9s,<\/em> who had filed the suit against him, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tone symbolic euro of compensation. \u2013 In most of the cited articles, as well as \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tin the verdict, travellers are used synonymously with Rroma. However, most \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma are sedentary. There are also other ethnic groups which have a minority \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof travellers, such as the Yeniche, who have European roots (compare 20 minutes \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2014, Le Cain 2014, Lib\u00e9ration 2014).<\/p>\n
