The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (2014) reports \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ton the plan of the ministry of culture of the state of Hessen, to expand the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tteaching on the history of the Rroma. Students should in the future be better informed \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tabout the centuries of persecution and exclusion of the Rroma. Therefore, the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tministry of culture, together with the association of Hessian Sinti and Rroma, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thas created a brochure that will be distributed to all schools of the state \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttill summer. In addition, the Hessen government will increase its support for \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe minority: \u201cIt is important that \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGypsies can preserve their ethnic, cultural, linguistic, and religious \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tidentity\u201d, said chief minister Volker Bouffier (CDU) in Wiesbaden at the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsigning of the agreement with the national association of Sinti and Roma. The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpaper addresses, among other things, the need to end discrimination and to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpromote the cultural identity and language\u201d.<\/em> Knowledge about the history \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand culture of the Rroma is often permeated with misinformation. Therefore, an \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tobjective, differentiated teaching about the Rroma is anything but an easy \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttask. The prime minister of Hessians, Volker Bouffier, announced in his statement \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthat the country is now fulfilling its historical responsibility. Adam Strauss, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tchairman of the Hessian association of Sinti and Rroma, called it shameful that \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmany Rroma still keep their identity a secret out of fear of being discriminated. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThis must change now (see Focus online 2014, von Bebenburg 2014, Journal \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFrankfurt 2014, Die Welt 2014).<\/p>\n
