Challa \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(2013) develops a small etymology of the English word “gypped”. She \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbegins her article by pointing out that most people are not aware of where the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tword actually comes from. In everyday language, the word is synonymous with \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cstolen\u201d. That the word refers to \u201cGypsies\u201d and thereby to Rroma and represents \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ta pejorative foreign name for the ethnic group is not well known: \u201cI encounter a lot of people who tell me that \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthey never knew the word \u2018gypped\u2019 had anything to do with gypsies, or that it\u2019s \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\toffensive \u2014 especially when the word is heard not read,\u201d says University of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tTexas at Austin professor Ian Hancock, who was born in Britain to Romani \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tparents. \u201cMy response to them is, that\u2019s okay. You didn\u2019t know but now you do. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSo stop using it. It may mean nothing to you, but when we hear it, it still \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thurts.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
