She  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbegins her article by pointing out that most people are not aware of where the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tword actually comes from. In everyday language, the word is synonymous with  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cstolen\u201d. That the word refers to \u201cGypsies\u201d and thereby to Rroma and represents  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ta pejorative foreign name for the ethnic group is not well known: \u201c<em>I encounter a lot of people who tell me that  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthey never knew the word \u2018gypped\u2019 had anything to do with gypsies, or that it\u2019s  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\toffensive \u2014 especially when the word is heard not read,\u201d says University of  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tTexas at Austin professor Ian Hancock, who was born in Britain to Romani  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tparents. \u201cMy response to them is, that\u2019s okay. You didn\u2019t know but now you do.  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSo stop using it.
