The English television \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tprogram Gypsies On Benefits And Proud<\/em>, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twhich reports on migrant Rroma in England, shamelessly confirms racist \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstereotypes about workshy, asocial Rroma, by unscrupulously abusing the good \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfaith of the interviewees. The populist program aims to show how easy it \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tallegedly is for Romanian and Bulgarian Rroma migrants to travel to England and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto abuse the local welfare system. That these are extreme individual cases is \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdeliberately concealed, as well as the fact that the portrayed Rroma lived in poorest \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tconditions and under discrimination in their home villages: \u201cGipsies have revealed how they are claiming \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthousands of pounds every month in benefits after moving to Britain and milking \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe generous state benefit system. The admissions were made in a damning new \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tChannel 5 documentary, which follows the lives of Roma gipsies in Britain. [\u2026] The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdocumentary, which will air April 11, also features Ion Lazar, 36, who came to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Britain with five other immigrants when the work restrictions on Romanians \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twere lifted in January. He admits he is just planning to stash his benefits to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttake home to his family in Romania. ‘I need maybe forty thousand from \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbenefits…. four zero thousand pounds for my family and I think this money I \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcan make in one years maybe two,’ he said.\u201d <\/em>The program Gypsies on Benefits And Proud<\/em> deliberately \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdiscredits an entire ethnic group with its undifferentiated reporting by establishing \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ta clear link between ethnicity and social abuse. It thus makes itself \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tindictable for racist defamation. Politically loaded views are presented as if they \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twere scientific facts. By this, they also abuse the good faith of television \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tviewers who expect the media to present truth, and encourage fascist views and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\topinions, as one can read in the comment section of the articles. These fascist \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcomments should provide ample food for thought for the creators of the TV show \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand the journalists as they reproduce the viewpoints of the program without thinking. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThey thereby implicitely advocate what is no less than an intellectual genocide \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof the Rroma (compare Britton 2014, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tChannel 5 2014, Dassanayake 2014, Lincolnshire Echo <\/em>2014, McGarry 2014).<\/p>\n
