This viewpoint was suggested and strengthened by the French  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmedia and nationalists: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cWhy this  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tastonishment? It means that residents are not perceived as bobos  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t[bourgeois-boh\u00e8me] (and vice versa) &#8211; neither sociologically nor politically. Since  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe campaign of Nicolas Sarkozy against prostitution during the mayoral  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\telections in 2001, the \u201cresident\u201d is, the new figure of the nation.<\/em>\u201d Local  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tresidents are not a homogeneous mass of Rroma-phobics as stated by the Front  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNational and the other right-wing populists. Rather, the social reality is  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdetermined by heterogeneity. Also the people who are committed to the Rroma and  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttheir rights are ordinary locals: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cIn  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tshort, it is high time to change our socio-political vocabulary. The bobos  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t[bourgeois-boh\u00e8me] are also local residents. Conversely, there are good  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tneighbours whose commitment is stimulated by pity and indignation and not by  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbitterness. Finally, we need to stop believing that voters and the elected  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tgovernmental majority are [&#8230;] free of Roma-phobia.\u201d<\/em> Fassin addresses with  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\this article an important topic in the public debate about Rroma that so far has  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\treceived too little attention. Up till now, medias were almost exclusively  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdominated by articles talking about a confrontation between local residents and  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmigrant Rroma. That this is not the norm cannot be stressed often enough.
