With his one-sided \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\treporting, Enoch (2014) confirms a pejorative image of Rroma as unscrupulous \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttraffickers. Without wanting to\u00a0trivialise\u00a0real human trafficking, which must \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbe fought by all means, mixing different topics and the ideological instrumentalization \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof the event raises questions. On one hand, Enoch reports about a Polish Rroma \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfamily, who is said to have lured several Polish families to England, where \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthey were forced into slave labour. The situations described are awful, and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\trange from repeated use of force to sexual assault and modern slavery. On the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tother hand, it is sufficient for Enoch to describe the perpetrators as Rroma. Other \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmotives for the crime are not mentioned. Nor how the Poles were lured to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEngland. Instead, the ethnicity of the perpetrators is cited as a self-explanatory \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmotive for the crime. Thus Enoch suggests a clear link between the ethnicity of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe perpetrators and the\u00a0offences\u00a0committed by them, what is openly racist. Mentioning \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof an ethnic group in connection with criminal\u00a0offences\u00a0is extremely problematic, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbecause it promotes a highly one-sided picture of the portrayed group. This \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdoes not conform with the lifestyle of a vast majority of the minority. That \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEnoch\u2019s article is also biased by ideological and political values can be seen \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfrom the terminology used and the reasoning of the journalist. He states: \u201cA family of Roma gypsies tricked three \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfellow Poles into moving to London, where one was forced into slavery and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsubjected to beatings – and all had their National Insurance numbers used to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\trip off the benefits system, a court heard.\u201d<\/em> The accusation that all Rroma \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfrom Eastern Europe want to apply for social benefits in England in order to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tenrich themselves, can often be read in the newspaper (compare Reid 2014, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tReilly 2014, Jay 2014). Through these articles it becomes evident that the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnewspaper is not interested in a factual, scientific treatment of the events, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbut willingly mixes these with stereotypes and ideological opinions.<\/p>\n
