P\u00e1sztor was \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnominated by the Democratic coalition as a candidate for mayor of Miskolc. But \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tP\u00e1sztor is not without controversy as he repeatedly expressed racist view \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttowards Hungarian Rroma. In 2009, at that time chief of police in Miskolc, he \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstated that the Rroma were responsible for most of the crimes in the city and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tits surroundings: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cWe can calmly announce \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthat the thefts in public space are committed by Gypsies\u201d<\/em>. He added that he \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdoes not really believe that a coexistence between Magyars and Rroma is \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpossible. Because of this clearly racist abuse, P\u00e1sztor is criticised among \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tleft-wing politicians. But not among all of them. M\u00e1rton Guly\u00e1s, head of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tKr\u00e9tak\u00f6r Foundation, learnt this during a demonstration of the democratic \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcoalition against the incumbent Fidesz party in Budapest. Guly\u00e1s held up a \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbanner saying \u201cLeft solutions instead of antiziganism\u201d. Thereby, Guly\u00e1s wanted \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto give expression to his displeasure with the nomination of Albert P\u00e1sztor. The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbanner was snatched away from Guly\u00e1s and he was slapped by several \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdemonstrators. Thereafter, several Hungarian politicians spoke up and either condemned \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe action or declared it as symptomatic for the disunity among the Democratic \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcoalition: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cThe head of the Hungarian \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tliberals, G\u00e1bor Fodor, in turn, explained that the left belies itself with the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsupport of the candidacy of P\u00e1sztor. The politician of the party \u201ccommon dialog \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfor Hungary\u201d, Gergely Kar\u00e1csony, even stated that the left has \u201ccompletely \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\temptied\u201d in moral terms.\u201d <\/em>Bognar\u2019s article shows that xenophobic slogans \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tagainst Rroma also occur repeatedly among left-wing politicians and question \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe ideas of a democratic state in which all citizens are truly equal. In this \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcontext, it should be mentioned that it is mainly the right-wing nationalist \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tJobbik-party, which promotes and disseminates racist ideas towards the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma-minority.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Pester Lloyd (2014) \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcriticises that the democratic coalition now campaigns to the detriment of Rroma \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tby nominating a Rroma-hostile candidate: <em>\u201cP\u00e1sztor \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tis &#8211; even for the left spectrum &#8211; not an isolated case, racist stereotypes &#8211; \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tagainst Roma mainly &#8211; are deeply rooted in Hungarian society, across the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpolitical spectrum and in all educational levels. But to make such a person the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcommon top candidate of the relevant left-wing parties DK, MSZP [&#8230;] is new, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand a clear signal that the Roma are only an object of political speculation \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfor the \u201cleft.\u201d\u201d <\/em>Pester Lloyd accuses P\u00e1sztor to deliberately deny in his \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\texperience as a police chief the exclusion and marginalization of Rroma and to reinterpret \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tit as a criminal mentality, which is clearly racist.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bognar, Peter (2014) \u201eRoma-Kriminalit\u00e4t\u201d l\u00e4sst \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSicherungen durchbrennen.
