Various American newspapers report about the new movie by Aaron Yeger, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twhich focuses on the marginalization of the Rroma in Europe. In an interview \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twith NPR (2014), Yeger explores the question of why no exact figures on murdered \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma exist as well what the marginalization and destruction of the minority meant \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfor the former communities. As for the number of victims, the lack of written \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdocumentation by Rroma themselves as well as the absence of official documents is \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tprobably the main reason. The film focuses on the aspects of exclusion and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpersecution that are recapitulated by eyewitnesses. Language and traditions are \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tonly briefly touched upon. The New York Times comments: \u201cWhile travelling to Budapest, Vienna, Montreal, Ukraine, Romania and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGermany, the film, the first feature by Aaron Yeger, presents a range of lucid \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcommentators, some of whom touch upon distant Roma history. But the primary \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfocus here is on the disenfranchisement and ruthless persecution the Roma have \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlong suffered in Europe: in Romania in the mid-1400s, by the Habsburgs in 1500, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tby Henry VIII and again by the Habsburgs in 1721. [\u2026] The darkest hour was the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHolocaust, in which hundreds of thousands of Roma perished in concentration \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcamps. Much of this movie is composed of survivors who give harrowing accounts \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof their experiences, and their warnings about rising ethnic hatred in Europe \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tshould not be ignored\u201d <\/em>(Webster 2014). Miller (2014) also points out that \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe image of the Rroma in the United States is shaped by stupendous reality TV shows \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsuch as Gypsy Sisters<\/em> and My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding<\/em>. These \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tconvey a stereotypical, one-sided picture of the Rroma. \u201cA People Uncounted\u201d \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttries to live up to the complexity of the fate of the Rroma (compare Broadway \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWorld 2014, Documentary Trailers 2011, Scheck 2014). \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
