Baer (2014 I\/II) reports \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ton the rise of right-wing nationalist party Jobbik in Hungary and their \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\trelation to the Rroma. The party has been able to claim a new record of votes \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tat the last elections. More than 20% of the electorate votes in Hungary now go \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto this party, which bases its policy on nationalism, isolationism and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\txenophobia. Jobbik now reigns in ten communities where it enforces a restrictive \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpolicy towards the Rroma. For example in Gy\u00f6ngy\u00f6spata, in north-eastern Hungary, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twhere the new Jobbik mayor is monitoring the Rroma with cameras and has compelled \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthem to compulsory community work in return for social welfare. Jobbik has \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\trecently gained a new image: it is said to act less aggressively than at the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbeginning and to have stopped working with obviously racist slogans, in order \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto have a greater appeal. The party recently changed its slogan on the Rroma from \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tan open rejection of Rroma to \u201cRoma who do not want to integrate\u201d (Legrand 2014). <\/em>However, this has to be \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tinterpreted rather as clever propaganda, than as a departure from the actual \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tparty program, as stated by the human rights activist Sandor Cz\u00f6ke. The head of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Rroma community of Gy\u00f6ngy\u00f6spata, Janos Farkas, is harassed more often and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdefamed since the takeover by Jobbik: \u201cIf, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfor example, you go into the forest to collect branches for heating and you get \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcaught, you get fined and maybe even come into prison. Their principle is that \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tall Rroma are criminal, that all Gypsies are bad. In 2012, they set fire to my \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thouse. Our only tort is to be Roma\u201d<\/em> (Baer 2014\/II). Baer\u2019s concerns towards \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe increase of rightwing-nationalist ideas in Hungary are completely to agree \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twith. However it is surprising that not a single word is said about the discrimination \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tagainst Rroma in France. Also there, nationalist politics are done at the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\texpense of the Rroma.<\/p>\n
