Slovenia: Legislative Package

The Slovene Minister of Labour, Family and Social Affairs Luka Mesec paid a working visit to Novo Mesto Mayor Gregor Macedoni. His ministry is coordinating the preparation of the legislative package to resolve Roma issues. They will try to complete the coordination on Thursday, he said in a press statement. They will then probably have another “intensive round of coordination” with mayors and others involved, and the package could go into public debate sometime by the end of March.

The package of laws is intended to encourage the inclusion of children in kindergartens and schools and improve living conditions.

Let’s see what comes out of it.

The city of Žilina will remove unimo cells (basically containers), in which 28 Roma families lived after the fires in Roma settlements in 2009 and 2016. These containers, on Bratislavská Street will be replaced by an apartment building built for 200’000 euros, and there are further plans for another 800’000 euros. Some members of the social commission proposed the abolition of the settlemtn and the immediate integration of Roma among residents in other parts of the city.

Well either way, if the residents do not have jobs and education, this will provide little progress.

Now these issues in Humni Dol were discussed at a second working meeting between representatives of the local government as well as with Roma mediators. It is doubtful they will find solutions …

Approximately 40 Roma men and women met in a cinema in Hrádek nad Nisou on Friday, February 21, to discuss the current situation of Roma in the Czech Republic. The main topics were social benefits reform, a very controversial one, employment, and equal status of Roma in society. One of the organizers of the meeting, Miroslav Tancoš, announced on this occasion that he plans to establish a new Roma political party.

The Freedom and Solidarity Party (SaS) points out the government’s failure to address Roma issues. On Wednesday, at a press conference in the village of Doľany in Spiš, MP Vladimír Ledecký (SaS) pointed out that the government plans to invest 1.1 billion euros over the next three years as part of the Action Plan for the Strategy for Equality and Inclusion and Participation of Roma in projects that, according to him, will not help this population group in any way.

He pointed out that these expenses are not explained or justified in any way. He is therefore submitting a resolution to the National Council of the Slovak Republic, which responds to “the passivity of government officials and the inefficient use of resources intended for supporting the Roma community”.

In the last ZDF political talk show “Markus Lanz” on February 25, 2025, one of the topics discussed was how the AfD managed to win the constituency in Gelsenkirchen (In the Ruhr). The Moderator and journalist Markus Lanz quickly found a clear answer: He talked about how many problems foreigners cause locally: the young Sinti and Roma are criminals, drop out of school, many of them are unemployed. Completely generalizing and ignoring the fact that structural problems like these are very closely linked to racism and discrimination, Lanz reproduces racist language towards a group that is already exposed to discrimination almost unnoticed to this day.
