A Hepatitis A outbreak has been reported in the Drugetháza community in Zakarpattia Ukraine, primarily affecting the Roma population, prompting health authorities to take measures to contain the infection.

Local health services are monitoring the situation, disinfecting public spaces and wells not connected to the central water supply, and restricting children from the outbreak area from attending schools until they meet health guidelines.

Authorities are urging residents to adhere to hygiene practices, avoid large gatherings, and consume only safe drinking water, as the disease poses a higher risk to children and the elderly.

The exhibition “Invisible. Resilience: The Past and Present of the Roma” explores the history and culture of the Roma people and highlights the Roma community’s contribution to modern society.

The exhibition consists of two thematic sections, each focusing on the past and present of the Roma people. Particular attention is paid to identity as a form of resistance and the preservation of cultural heritage.

The event was organized by the ARKA Youth Agency for Roma Culture Advocacy in partnership with the Babyn Yar National Historical and Memorial Reserve, the Odesa Holocaust Research Center, and the Ukrainian Holocaust Research Center. The project was implemented with the support of the German Embassy in Ukraine and the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance.

Another task of the “Pure Dignity” project is to overcome stereotypes: public prejudice against the Roma community, and among Roma families themselves, caution in interacting with services.

On March 10th, near the village of Patskanovo in the Uzhhorod district, a group of Roma blocked the road of a service vehicle and attacked military personnel with wooden sticks.

According to the police of the Zakarpattia region, the incident occurred during the notification of residents of the district about mobilization and verification of military registration documents. People deliberately blocked the movement of a military vehicle, after which they provoked a conflict.

A former Roma neighbourhood in Odessa is being refurbished, with the creation of a large residential building xalles “Soho Quarter”. There is a catch though: the nearly 2100-square-meter plot is designated “for other historical and cultural purposes,” where residential construction is prohibited. Furthermore, the property was previously seized as part of a criminal investigation on suspicion of fraud, and the court explicitly prohibited any construction work.

Seems that the developer nevertheless got the permit … What happened to the Roma who used to live there is unclear.

On August 15, 2025, a humanitarian action was held in the Roma settlement of the village of Domboky of the Velykyluchkivska community, aimed at supporting vulnerable families. The event was organized by the head of the charitable organization “SOS Children’s Villages Uzhgorod” Natalia Kryvoruchko with the participation of the Regional Coordinator for National Minorities from the OSCE Projects in Ukraine at the Representation of the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights in the Transcarpathian region Mykola Chyzhmar.

It looks like a nice alibi exercise. Much more needs to be done.

On July 17th, a press conference was held in the Uzhhorod press club discussing the results of the project “Leaders of Change – Roma Children on the Path to Success”, which was implemented in Transcarpathia.

Recommendations for the “Action Plan for 2026-2027 on the Implementation of the Strategy for Promoting the Realization of the Rights and Opportunities of Persons Belonging to the Roma National Minority in Ukrainian Society for the Period Until 2030” in the Transcarpathian Region will also be presented.

In a Roma settlement in Velykyi Berezne, in Transcarpathian Ukraine, right on the Slovak border, a confrontation between Ukrainian border guards and local Roma escalated. Background is not clear, but Roma threw stones at the border guards, and they fired live rounds. There are wounded, apparently on bth sides, although between stones and rifles, this can’t really be equitable.
