More on Travellers in Switzerland

Published by:

Whereas the other travellers in Bern, as we learnt, Sinti, created problems (see yesterday’s post), these Rroma in Aargau left the land clean and paid for their stay. It is therefore all the more of a mystery why the peasant will not want to rend another time to Travellers…

Berne: Alternative Association Want to Be Travellers

Published by:

An alternative movement in the city of Berne, who live in old caravans and camps around Bern is fighting the city ordinances that require them to move every three months. Their lawyer suggested that the state recognise them as Travellers, so that they get the right to stay for 6 months at the same spot.

Notwhistanding the fact that this law allowing travellers to stay put for 6 months is somewhat weird, the suggestion is an interesting one. The Swiss only recognise travellers, not the ethnic minority of Jenische and Rroma. In fact, the way of life is the key. So if they live like travellers, according to Swiss logic, they must be …

Rroma write to Rome’s Mayor

Published by:

The new mayor of Rome, Virgina Ray is on collision course with Rroma in the capital. Latest issue are statements of one of the councillors, Paula Murano who made statements that Rroma organisations deemed demagogy: Pointing at a Rrom rummaging in a wastebin, she said that is she would do it, she would be arrested, but in the case of Rroma and immigrants, nothing happens.

Rroma organisations wrote to the mayor, saying that there is a phenomenon of poverty, that has nothing to do with the criminalisation of an ethnic minority.

Rroma Holocaust

Published by:

A reminder that there was a Rroma holocaust. Unfortunately, the term used here is a total no-go: Porrajmos. It is first not understood by all non Vlach, and second, among Vlach, it refers more to a rape than anything else. Bad choice of words for a very real Holocaust. Let’s stick to Holocaust.

NPD: Justice Dismisses Case

Published by:

The case brought against the extreme-rightist party NPD in Germany about their poster “Geld für die Oma, anstatt für Sinti und Roma[Money for grandma instead of for Sinti and Roma] has been dismissed. The prosecutor said there was nothing racist or inciting racial hatred in that poster (Really). The Central Council of Sionti and Roma is appalled and actually said that with the prosecutor’s logic, one literally could say “Don’t buy from Jews” and this would not be racist. Or would it be?

Rroma Palaces

Published by:

An article on the Rroma palaces of Buzescu. For once, in spite of some clichés, quite differentiated. A few wrong facts, and we are missing the small note that not all Rroma are as Kalderaša. And Kalderaša they are, all of them, and showing off.

Switzerland: Neuchatel wants Travellers out

Published by:

The authorities in Neuchatel / Val de Ruz want the foreign travellers out. And want to take measures to prevent foreign travellers to come to the canton. This continues the current trend of forbidding foreign Rroma from coming over to Switzerland.

Canada: The family is going

As we write, the Lakatos family will probably have returned to Hungary. Their permit expired yesterday, and bar a miracle, they will have had to leave.

Germany / Stuttgart: Begging

Published by:

A report on begging in Stuttgart and on the actions of the police against it. Again, Rroma are seen as the main  source of beggars (from Bulgaria, Slovakia, and from Romania). Clearly an amalgamation of Rroma to beggars …
