European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) hosted the 11th European Platform for Roma Inclusion on the 27th and 28th of November. The main topic centred on the path from education to employment for young Roma.

The Czech Roma activist and Member of Parliament Ladislaw Body died a few days ago at the early age of 68. He engaged himself relentlessly for the cause of the Roma and for their rights, this in a country not known for its love of the Roma minority.

Czech Republic: Hepatitis Epidemic

Ušti nad Labem in the Czech Republic is experiencing an epidemic of Hepatitis A with nearly 300 people affected. The outbreak started in a Roma settlement and later spread to the town.

Rome – Roma Criticise the Mayor

Virginia Raggi is being criticised in relation with the EU funds allocated for the period 2014-2020 to Rome for resolving and integrating Roma. According to the Roma, nothing is being done.

In some places, France seems to be starting to solve the issue of 20’000 people: In Montpellier, in the south, the largest shantytown will be closed in the spring and its inhabitants will be re-lodged in bungalows. In Ivry, near Paris, Roma are welcome (yes) and in Lille in the North, a mayor and the state are summoned in court for the illegal expulsion of a small camp of Roma. Finally, in Paris, the petite ceinture camp is awaiting its 4th closure.
Other than that, social news, not so good: Children victims of violence in their family in Besançon; general bad situation for children living in shantytowns; and minors’ pregnancies.

Slovakia: Special Schools or not?

Slovakia has a tradition of putting Roma in special school for children with mental problems. An NGO wanted to check the situation. It still exists, but is probably more differentiated. In the Rokycani district, 20% of Roma children are still enrolled in such schools. High by any standards, but lower than it was.
