Another one of those articles. This time, about residents who are “terrorised”, “trembling”, when faced by Roma “Criminality”. Clearly, there is a problem in some neighbourhoods, but such articles will not help solving the issues.

Germany hosted the thematic visit on combating anti-Gypsyism within the framework of the Committee of Experts on Roma and Traveller Issues (ADI-ROM). The partner countries Croatia, France, Lithuania, Romania and Switzerland participated in the visit.

Very nice… Especially when you know that Switzerland doesn’t recognise Roma as a national minority, and when you see that racism is exceedingly difficult to combat there. A case against a rightist politician was lost recently. He had stated “if one doesn’t recognise a ‘Gypsy’ [Zigeuner] immidiately, one smells him”. That is not racist in Switzerland …

Rome: Roma Camp Closure

The Roma camp located in Via Cesare Lombroso in Rome was closed. 33 families lived ther with a total of 145 people, more than a third of whom were children. All the inhabitants of the camp were relocated and the cleaning operations were carried out without recourse to public force. Six families were housed independently, the other 27 were housed partly in social housing and partly in other housing solutions. The Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, announced the operation this morning: “Today – he said – is a historic day. For the first time in the history of Rome, this operation is taking place without an eviction order and without recourse to public force.”

The police and the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime committed direct discrimination against a Roma child from Prilep by failing to conduct a thorough and detailed investigation into how the child was injured in the head, chest and back and whether this was due to the use of excessive police force.

Only notable news in France this week about Roma is about the arrestation of three people for a tentative of arson on a Roma camp. Clearly, the fact that the three were of North African origins opened doors to some of the most extreme rightist parties, alothough some of their followers did the same.

Czech Floods, Aid, and Roma

Some Roma in Ostrava complain about the alleged unequal treatment of officials and the reluctance to pay them flood aid. According to the testimony of some Roma who lost their property, the conditions for obtaining this assistance are discriminatory and the attitude of the office staff was in some cases arrogant. Lucie Fuková, the government commissioner for the affairs of the Roma minority, immediately began to address the situation.

Slovenia, Partisans, and Excecutions

Communist partisans murdered 3’450 in the cave under Macesnova gorica in early 1945. These were Slovenians prisonners of war and Roma. Some of theme still do not have a burial place. The mayor of Ljubljana refused recently that the Roma killed in this massacre be buried in the city’s cemetery.

Czechia: Floods

The Cech towns of Krnov and Opava are struggling with the consequences of devastating floods that affected both cities. Flooded houses, mud and damaged infrastructure crippled the lives of local residents. The Roma community, like other residents, have lost everything and are in desperate need of basic assistance, including masonry dryers, hygiene supplies and food. Rescue work is complicated by a lack of equipment and access to the most affected areas, where coordinated interventions by volunteers, organizations and the army are taking place. Every minute is now crucial for the recovery of the affected cities.

Another one of those “statistics”. Here, it states that only 29% of Roma are getting the minimum living income. It then proceeds to conclude that 71% of Roma who are entitled to this benefit are not receiving it.

Spot the issues? 1. How many Roma are there? No one knows for sure. 2. The author is assuming that all Roma are poor. Which is not the case.

Bad journalism, even worse arithmetics.

The district court in Karviná released Jaromír Lukeš on parole, convicted of an arson attack on Roma in Vítkov in 2009. Lukeš was sentenced to 22 years in prison for his attack with accomplices on a Roma house in Vítkov.

Czechia: Elections

Regional elections will take place on Friday and Saturday in 13 regions of the Czech Republic, with the exception of Prague. In the capital city, the function of the regional council is performed by the Prague City Council, which is elected in municipal elections. Voters in these counties will begin selecting their county representatives tomorrow afternoon. In a third of the state territory, including three Prague districts, they will also have the opportunity to decide on their senators.

Let’s see how many Roma are elected this time.

The central topic of the meeting was the security situation in the municipality of Novi Sad and the related Roma issue.

On September 8, shots were fired in the Roma settlement of Šmihel in Novo Mesto, and just a few minutes later another house caught fire. Apparently, two Roma families quarreled. One of thm reported the other for illegal construction, whereby the second shot at his neighbour.

Slovenia: Protests

A protest will be held in the Slovene town of Škocjan on Thursday. The reason for the protest is the inaction of the current government regarding Roma crime.

According to th paper, the Roma “problem” in south-eastern Slovenia has reached its lowest point in the period of independent Slovenia, say representatives of civil initiatives. Despite numerous appeals from the desperate population, the authorities, which can adopt solutions and measures, do not respond. That is why the protest will take place.

The story of a small vilalge called Květušín in Czechia, a village that was once German, and whose population was deported after the war, and became a military district. Roma settled there and the govrnment created a special school for Roma, promising children would be taken good care. The idea, however, was the create new people, and insulate them from their Roma background.

On Friday morning, a round table on the topic of Roma employment in the Moravian-Silesian region took place in the community center Vesnička sužítí in the Muglinov district of Ostrava. The main topic of discussion was the question of how to break down prejudices and improve cooperation between Roma workers and employers in the region. “The Roma want to work, and entrepreneurs in the Moravian-Silesian Region are also in demand for workers, but there is still mistrust and discrimination that prevents greater integration. We have to find a way to change this situation and encourage both sides to cooperate,” said MEP Zdechovský.

Czechia: Meeting of Roma Coordinators

A two-day meeting of regional coordinators for Roma affairs, civil members of the Government Council for Roma Minority Affairs, Roma advisers and field workers took place in Liberec. The aim of the event was education, exchange of experience and sharing of examples of good practice in the field of Roma integration in the Czech Republic. The emphasis was on communication and cooperation between all parties involved.
