Not much this week about Roma in France, which is not surprising in view of the riots that followed the killing of a young man by the police in the Paris suburbs.

A festival in Poitiers focusing on Roma tales, the paramisja, and an article about a “huge” Roma camp (with about 500 inhabitants) which apparently disturbs business.

A Photographic Pilgrimage will be presented this summer at the chapel of the Museon Arlaten, the “Rencontres d’Arles” invited the film director Tony Gatlif (Latcho Drom, Gadjo dilo, Exils, Liberté, Tom Medina, etc.) to tell us the story of the Gypsies, Manouches , Roma and Travelers from France and Europe.

More of the usual this week in France. A camp in Arles was dismantled, in Marseilles, residents are deprived of their parking because of an illegal Roma camp, and finally, two young Roma caught after having apparently stolen 212 mobile phones during a festival.

First, a TV “reportage” omen “Gypsy Wedding”… With all stereotypes, and the implied generalisation on all Roma. Then a recent book, translated from the Italian on Roma living on the outskirts of Florence, Italy. Then the more usual: A massive Roma camp in Bordeaux, with more than 2000 people, and a camp near Aix en Provence that will be closed soon.

An interesting article on the commemoration at the camp of Saliers, close to Arles, where Roma were interned by the Vichy regime before being deported. Another article about a book called “Kumpanija” the terms used among Kalderaša to denote a group of Roma travelling together for work. Another article on the Saintes Marie de la Mer, and a final one on the increase of camps in the Nantes region, in a right wing chanel.

Saintes Marie de la Mer

The pilgrimage of Saintes Marie de la Mer was in full swing the last few days. But with a bittersweet aftertaste, with several Roma accusing the municipality to want to replace them with actors …

Sad.

Little news this week in France on Roma. The Barvalo exhibition in Marseilles, a camp closed near Fos also in the Marseilles region. Finally, the story of a Romni whose child was forcibly removed based on the testimony of a man who turned out to be a racist. Bad.

Several articles are devoted to the new exhibition in Marseilles in the museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisation entitled “Barvalo”

Not much about Roma in France this week. Two articles on the judicial system: One  where two Roma who were accused of stealing copper were freed for lack of proof; the other, the case of a child removed from her mother based on a wrong testimony. The usual story about the closure of camps in Bordeaux – they simply pop up again somewhere else. And finally, an intervention in the French senate about the lack of social care for Roma children, and the fact that the Roma population living in camps does not decrease. There are roughly 15’000 of them. Since at least 20 years.

Not much this week in the press about Roma in France. In Lyon, Roma are being housed in bungalows. Definitively better than the camps. Ear Paris, Roma left a camp. In Western France, a camp was closed. And in the South two Roma from Bosnia were arrested while attempting to steal bicycles.

Not much this week. Ab amusing (and inaccurate) article on the French slang expression “nachave pelo” meaning in slang “get away”, “run”. It comes from the verb našav, to flee or to escape, and pelo, a testicle (and not a man as they say). Near Paris, an abandoned camp is an ecological problem, and near Bordeaux, the future closure of a camp means many inhabitants will loose their lodgings, and no replacement solutions have been organised.
