At long last, a new addition to the Swiss school curriculum: Jenische, Sinti and Roma.
Viki Gabor appeared with her parents in the weekend studio “Questions for Breakfast”, where she promoted the documentary “Viki Gabor: My World”. The 8-episode documentary series tells the story of an ordinary, though extraordinary, 15-year-old girl who, thanks to her passion and talent, has developed from a shy, introverted girl into a successful idol of the young generation. The camera accompanies Viki during concerts, foreign trips, but also in everyday life.

On the occasion of International Roma Day, the 26th edition of the Romano suno / Roma Dream competition was launched a week ago, in which Roma speakers can express themselves creatively and publicly in their mother tongue. Moreover, thanks to the competition texts, the general public can also take a closer look at the world of the Roma. Since 1996, the competition has been organized by the non-profit company Nová škola.
“Paleta” is a program of the Radio-television Vojvodina.It is a selection from the content prepared by the television editorial offices in the languages of the national communities, thus also in Romanes. In order to get closer to each other, “Paleta” is broadcast in the languages of the national communities, with a Serbian translation.
In a speech during the commemoration last Sunday, the chairwoman of the State Association of German Sinti and Roma Berlin-Brandenburg, Petra Rosenberg, recalled her father. He survived the concentration camp, but always struggled with what he experienced there and with the memories of it. Rosenberg also criticized the fact that Sinti and Roma still experience discrimination and stigmatization today.

Commemorations were held yesterday in Buchenwald and Bergen Belsen on the 78th anniversary of the liberation of those camps. These commemorations focused this year on Sinti and Roma and the current increase in racism towards them.

Serbia is working on an initiative to amend family law to define and recognize child marriage as a form of human trafficking, as 22-50% of Serbian Romane girls are married before the age of 18 years old.
A recent UNICEF report revealed that more than half of girls from Roma settlements in Serbia and 22% of girls from low-income families marry before the age of 18. Even more worryingly, 16% of Roma girls marry before the age of 15 and 5% give birth at this age.
As usual, take these percentages with a pinch of salt. These usually refer to the Roma that are recorded as such, not to all Roma.
Not much this week in France. In Western France, in Angers, the authorities are asking themselves how to resolve the issue of 4 Roma camps in the city. Well, for 400 people, this should not be really complicated … An event in Brittany with Roma music and initiation to Romanes was organised in collaboration with a Roma association. Then the more usual: Near Paris, a camp will probably be closed and also near Paris, a squat in a former police building was evacuated.
On the occasion of April 8th, the City of Poznań, in cooperation with the Bahtałe Roma Foundation, organized a meeting with Roma culture in the White Room of the office. There was music and performance by the Sara Czureja Band.
