Slovakia was reprimanded in the European Parliament on its treatment of Roma in Košice and specifically in Lunik IX. Romeo Franz, MEP from Germany and Sinto said “In Košice, Roma cannot take buses on the basis of their ethnic origin and I think this is an aspect that we have to illuminate once more”. The Slovak press is not pleased to say the least.

To be noted, The Croatian Ustaša exterminated nearly all Roma in the country during World War Two, the ones living there currently being descendants of Roma from other parts of Yugoslavia who migrated there after the war.

Roma volunteers are organising walking tours of the 8th district in Budapest, a district whose population is overwhelmingly Roma. The tours offer the opportunity to meet Roma and confront some of the stereotypes.

According to Abel Ravacs, the Plenipotentiary of the Government of the Slovak Republic for Roma Communities, pre-school education is the right mean to further Roma integration in Slovakia.
