Roma Gathering

Roma from several countries are gathered and camp in a park in the Western Slovak spa town of Piešťany. It is apparently due to a vision of the Virgin Mary that a healer had on that spot. Many Roma – from the evangelical churches have been bringing their ill relatives are on the site.

The head of the Department of Juvenile Prevention of the Odessa City Police Department, Colonel of Police Vitaliy Kapulyak, spoke with the head of the Romani congress, with whom he discussed ways of overcoming the problems related to violations of the legislation and minor offences by young Roma.

The president of the ultra nationalist Ukrainian C14, Eugene Karas missed a good opportunity to shut up. In an interview with Glavkom, he described how, according to him, in Ukraine it is possible to “socialize” Roma and described how his group “polices” the streets of Ukrainian cities.
As a reminder – C14 was behind the attack in Kiev against a Roma camp.

Roma in the Ukraine

In a UNN interview, a human rights activist, Zemfira Kondur, vice president of the Russian Chikryli Women’s Foundation said that today, up to 400,000 Roma live in Ukraine, but only 5-7% of the total live in camps and migrate around the country. The official numbers of Roma are much lower, essentially because most Roma simply don’t declare their origins.

The Canadian university professor David Scheffel (63) has been in custody since last November for allegedly sexual offenses with children. He claims the photographs of naked children are related to his research on Roma. He also said he was studying the sexual practices among Roma.

Ukraine: Suspect Named

Finally, a suspect was named in the case of the destruction of the Roma camp in Kiev in April. It is Sergei Mazur, the coordinator of C14, an ultra-nationalist organisation.

Slovakia: Court Decision

The Regional Court in Prešov definitively decided that the town of Sabinov and the Ministry of Construction acted in a discriminatory manner in the way they handled Roma and non-Roma inhabitants when moving homes in the city centre. They had decided to move the Rom out of the town’s centre.

Ukraine: Commission

A permanent working group was set up in Ukraine to deal with the integration and protection of Roma rights. According to the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the working group includes representatives of the National Police, the State Migration Service, the National Academy of Internal Affairs, the Council of Europe Office in Ukraine, the Ministry of Social Policy, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Culture, the SBU, the KSCA, as well as Roma NGOs.
