A Slovakian view on the EU survey which interviewed a number of Rroma in that country. The results for Slovakia are bad. Children go to sleep hungry, do not go to school, families have no water, no toilet, entire families are unemployed, etc.

The organisations nominated for the 2016 Roma Spirit Awards have been nominated. The award is meant to organisation promoting integration of the Rroma community in Slovakia.

A Rroma fashion designer from Slovakia, Pawel Berky, won an international fashion competition, the Exalt Fashion Show and received a price in Salt Lake City this past week.

Education for the Rroma minority is failing. Rroma, who are often put into special schools are de-facto barred from higher education, be it secondary or higher. This even though it is proven, that education is the best way to prevent unemployment.

The town of Žilina in the North of Slovakia had to re-lodge Rroma who had to leave their flats due to a fire in the building. They chose to relocate them into containers, but with a caveat: Each family wanting to be re-located has to pay 200 EUR in advance (a lot of money there) and signed a rental contract. For those who had arrears, nothing will be done.

A Slovak Teacher from the village of Muránska Dlhá Lúka, in the centre of the country, Ms. Monika Podolinská, received an award fro her work with Rroma children in her village helping them overcome the initial hurdle in school and thus resulting in more Rroma going to secondary school.

The allegations against Rroma politicians in the Presov region of vote buying have not been confirmed. They were accused of having enticed Rroma to vote by bribing them with cigarette and other gifts.

A study of the impact of a movie called Sidliskovy Dream Rhythms showed that it has quite a positive impact on reducing stereotypes and prejudices against Rroma. The movie was seen by nearly 100’000 people in Slovakia and roughly a third of that in the Czech Republic.

The planned construction of a Rroma community Centre in Poprad, in Eastern Slovakia. A petition has been launched against the project who, according to opponents, has neither head nor tail. It will be built on the site of “illegal” dwellings where Rroma live.

Richard Sulik, head of the rightist party Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) is openly advocating segregation of Rroma in the education system in Slovakia. He also made several other derogatory comments about minorities and LGBT.

The Slovak government finally recognised that their dream to reach a low unemployment rate will require the country to tackle the question of the Rroma who are very often excluded from jobs due to rampant racism and prejudice.

František Tanko, of the Roma Civic Union of Slovakia has been criticising the use of EU funds in Slovakia. He says that many towns and cities have received millions from the EU, but that there is nothing to show against that money.
He is unfortunately quite right …

The Slovakian Village of Spišský Hrhov was awarded the European Roma Spirit Award 2016 in the category of village and city. It is the first time that such an award aimed at inclusion and integration has been given to a village or town in Slovakia. Maybe something is changing?

The Slovak Government wants to reduce the number of Rroma children in special schools and to this end is focusing on pre-school training.
We hope this will works, as in Slovakia (and in the Czech Republic and Hungary) putting Rroma children in special schools is almost the norm.

An article on the origins of the current racism in Slovakia, which, according to the author can be traced to the “Shock therapy after the fall of the Iron Curtain” which brought “Slovakia capitalism without its natural development, which often lasted even 100 years” resulting in a “real capitalism without the bourgeoisie, without intellectual elite that would have supported it.” The author also goes back further to the fact that Slovakia was built on the remnants of the Austrian Hungarian Empire, but forgetting that the policies of exclusion and racism were started under that regime in the 18th century.
