An article and video of Syruian Domari refugees in France. Domari are part of the same migration from India as the Roma, but never crossed into Europe and remained in the Middle East. They have been victims of the ethnic cleansing by IS and displaced by the war.

An interesting project – photos from one single Roma family taken over a period of 20 years – is presented in Arles, in Southern France.
Clearly, as usual, there are clichés in the pictures, but the scope is quite unique.

Summer pause on the news in France on Roma. A fire in a camp near Paris blocked one highway; in Triel sur Seine, a camp can stay – at least temporary; in Ivry, near Paris, 60 Roma were evicted from a squat; 13 families who were evicted a year ago in Montreuil are still on the street; in the North, an association is trying to find a suitable spot for a camp; and in the southwest, in Toulouse, residents complain of migrants squatting in their courtyard.

Very few news this week on France and Roma. In the North of France, neighbours of a Roma camp are fed up with the situation and are asking for the closure of the camp; also in the North, one squat has been closed down; while near Paris, a camp will be shut down shortly; and finally near Nantes in Western France, an association is looking for caravans to relocate Roma (who probably never lived in caravans in the first place).

More news on Roma in France – an usual pattern during the holiday season. In Marseilles, the largest Roma settlement of the city was closed, leaving 200 people on the street; another camp was closed in the Var, with journalist showing a video that suggest Roma were stealing scooters and cars; in Toulouse, a camp will be closed this coming Monday; in Angers, in Western France, on the one hand a solidarity manifestation for Roma and on the other, a camp that will probably be closed; in Lille, a Roma camp totally burnt down; and near Paris, a communist mayor launched an operation blocking a major highway to protest against a squat along that road and ask for the government to undertake something.

Not many news lately on the Roma in France. In the Western part of France, in Nantes, the city has decided to fund a project for insertion for the roughly 1’800 Roma there, with of course Breizh Info protesting at what they see to be a waste of money; in Montpellier, in the South of France, residents next to a Roma camp are protesting and even going to court; near Paris, a member of Parliament for the Républicains made derogatory comments on Roma and beggars in general; a young Rom was beaten to death in the North of France, his assailants have been arrested – the press doesn’t mention their origins; and finally, a note on the current interior minister Gérad Collomb, and still mayor of Lyon and his anti-migrants views;

Three articles which show what, collectively, the French politicians think of Roma. First, not surprising, a Front National member who made some borderline jokes about Roma, then , a Républicain who has been condemned (good, by the way) for his statements about Roma, and finally, a La France en Marche freshly elected parliament member who makes similar blanket statements about Roma.

A good news for a change, with a camp in Aix en Provence, in the South of France where the city was condemned for its expulsion order, meaning the camp can stay for now; a camp in Montpellier where neighbours are complaining; an expulsion in Montreuil, near Paris; garbage on the site of a former camp also near Paris; another camp evacuated near Annecy in the French Alps; and finally a camp in Lille which was also closed.

Not surprisingly, with the legislative elections in full swing, there are very little news about Roma in France: One article on the camps in the city of Lilles, in the North; the story of a squat in the same region; and, alas, Breizh Info again. The latter on prostitution – insisting on the ethnicity of the prostitutes and the pimps.

There has been much less news lately in France about Roma. Whereas there used to be many articles in the Press, there are now much less, which is good.
In Bobigny, near Paris, the camp can stay for the time being. In Triel-Carrièrres, in the Paris region, a camp is not that lucky and will be closed. In addition, a fire – probably of criminal nature burnt part of the camp. In Valmy, in North Eastern France, another camp was closed. In the North, in Roubaix, another camp was evacuated while the justice declared an eviction of Roma to have been illegal and finally, in Lille, several of the owners of the land on which a camp is located went to court to force an evacuation.
