Angelo Garand, a French Manouche from the Orléans region in Francewas killed by the police in April. The police was looking for him as he had failed to return to prison after a leave (he was condemned for two years following burglaries).
The police commando who killed him claimed he threw himself on them.
The family wants now to get full transparency on what really happened and on why he was killed. They need support – help them too!

An evening centred on Rroma was organised in Montreuil, a northern suburb of Paris with quite a few Rroma. There was a debate on integration, and Anina Ciuciu, a young Rromni and a law student in Paris, provided the best example possible: Give them a chance, and it will happen!

While most news this last week were devoted to the reaction on the movie ‘A bras Ouverts”, there are nevertheless quite a few news on camps and evictions, unfortunately.
Camps closures in Grigny, in the Essonne, in Lagny sur Marne and in Champlan, near Paris; in Dijon, volunteers constructed house for Rroma (GOOD!); in Bordeaux, several squats will be destroyed this summer; for in Marseilles, association protested the upcoming destruction of a camp; and in Antibes, in the South, a camp was closed with the help of the police.

The moive “A bras ouverts” – with open arms – is rightly seen in France as being racist. Many articles on this topic, and on the stereotypes.
So while it is bad that such a movie was made, it is definitively good that it prompts quite a bit of discussion, and good discussion.

The mayor of the small town of Fontaine, near Grenoble, has decided to ask justice to intervene following the comments of one of the members of the council, the Front National member Franck Sinisi who had proposed to remove gold teeth from Rroma to pay for their lodgings.
This time it seems that the extreme right party is acting fast to limit collateral damage, probably due to the upcoming presidential elections.

Apart from the controversy following an interview of the actors of Clavier’s film, not htat many news in France on the Rroma.
First, an article on the impact of the expulsions on school attendance by Rroma children. Clearly, these expulsions do nothing for integration. Then, near Paris, protests by Rroma in Ivry, following their expulsion and the lack of alternative lodgings; the story of the “insertion village” in St. Genis les Ollières near Lyon; some questions on travellers’ sites in the North of France; near Nantes, 120 expulsed Rroma moved to another site; a protest in Fontaine, near Grenoble (where one FN politician suggested one should take the Rroma’s golden teeth); Rroma asking for a reprive in Nice until Easter; and finally, an association defending Rroma in Toulouse.

There are great expectations on the conclusion of the people’s initiative regarding the closure of Roma camps. The document, signed by thousands of Roman citizens, was presented in July two years ago to end up in drawers first under Ignazio Marino and then under the Special Commissioner Francesco Paolo Tronca postponing the delicate issue of Roma camps. Today is finally revived thanks to repeated requests by the organizing.
