More of the same, in spite of the nearing winter. 600 Rroma displaced by the closure of a camp n St. Ouen near Paris; 100 other Rroma threatened with eviction from their camp near Vigneux sur Seine, close to Paris; a large controversy in the North of France with a mayor publishing statistics based on ethnicity (FORBIDDEN in France), stating that nearly 1’000 live in Denain; a recourse in Roubaix to prevent the destruction of a camp; various associations in Roubaix are protesting the expulsions of Rroma in that city; a positive news in the North with the education of migrant children, Rroma amongst them; another positive note in Nantes, with a shared lunch for migrants; tensions in the South West over squats, especially from Bulgarian Rroma; conflict in Béziers, in the South West of France between the mayor (very much anti-migrant) and associations over the closure of a room that, according to the mayor, was used as an illegal mailbox for migrants and Rroma; and finally, a fire in a camp near Montpellier.

The hunt for the Rroma who were expelled in July from their camp made it to the international press. The French are now trying to expel these Rroma from France, i.e. send them back to Romania.

The French senate re-established the old 1969 law on travellers which forces them to carry a travel documents which allows them to travel and forces them to be attached to a commune, précising that no village or town shoudl have more than 3% of travellers.
The law had been abrogated in 2015.

Myria, a Belgian Federal organisation on migration issued its 19th report on human trafficking. In Belgium, 33 infractions to the law on human trafficking were related to begging and implicitly to Rroma.
Enough for the Press to title and generalise that all beggars are in the hands of human traffickers and a mafia, stereotypes that are totally untrue and dangerous. Really BAD!!!
And across the border, in the North of France, the police tries to arrest beggars in Lille … This will not solve the problem.

Only a few news this week on Rroma in France. The fate of the Rroma from Montreuil who were evicted in July still dominate the news. Frankly, had half the energy that has been put into news, manifestations and other activities be invested into solving the issue, these people would have a house by now. Now, the are threatened with being expelled from France. Among the other news, a fire in a Rroma camp in Grigny, near Paris; neighbours protesting a Rroma squat near Paris; in Western France, in Caen, Rroma from Albania are occupying a house; and finally in the South West, after their eviction, Bulgarian Rroma are sleeping in tents in Mérignac.

According to French NGOs, nearly 9’000 children live in France in Rroma camps (roughly 25’000 people in total – out of probably 500’000 to 750’000 Rroma in that country) and are being denied the most basic right of the French Republic, namely the right to attend school.

Several articles this week on the schooling of Rroma migrants. According to the press, one in 5 mayor in France is “reticent” to take Rroma children in school. More than half of the young adults living in camps have totally dropped out of school. Luckily there are also volunteers who teach reading in writing to young children in the camps themselves. For a country that prides itself to have “universal” access to school, SHAME.

Still no solution for the Rroma who were expulsed in Monteruil, this is spite of a lot of mobilisation; the Rroma who occupied the island of the impressionists in Chatou have left; in Western France, the prefect of the Loire Atlantique discussed possible means of integrating Rroma in Nantes; in Bordeaux, a camp was closed; in Albi, in the South, no solution has yet been found to the Albanian asylum seekers; in the North, in Hautbourdin, the Rroma can stay; a positive story on an association helping young Rroma to learn near Paris; a mayor complaining of having to enrol Rroma children in classes (again); and finally, a really BAD story on beggars and human trafficking re-inforcing all stereotypes.

The town of Saint-Ouen, in the North of Paris, has been ordered to enroll Rroma children in its schools. Its mayor had recently refused to enrol them on the premises that the town was already facing other problems and could not cope with these children…

Apart from the news from Marseilles (see other post on France), news are like always in France: A camp evacuated in Brunoy, near Paris; Montreuil, where the people who were forced out of the camp still haven’t been re-lodged; in Marseilles, where, besides the headlines of the attack, Rroma were also expelled from a camp just before school begin; in Montpellier, where a fire was started in a camp – again; and in the north, in Roubaix, where people take the opportunity of a Rroma camp to dump toxic waste; in Maubeuge, the story of a part of town being reconstructed (after the eviction of Rroma); and finally in Lille, were volunteers do activities with Rroma children.
A camp with nearly 160 Rroma in Marseilles was attacked with Molotov Cocktails and pump guns. 7 people landed in hospital, three persons were arrested. There seems to have been an altercation between the Rroma and some local youths, although at this stage nothing is clear.
Not much this week on Rroma. Several articles on the Rroma expulsed from Montreuil near Paris who, 16 days after the facts, are still without shelter. Also a polemic in Lyon about the municipality of Lyon who cut water to a Rroma camp, and a young pickpocket of 12 …
Olympic effect, it seems, or simply August lull ?
