Not much in terms of Rroma news in France – must be the result of the Olympic games and a few other prominent news.

What there is, is mainly about the evacuation of the Montreuil camp, near Paris with politicians an activists helping Rroma; about dozens of animals that were abandoned by Rroma when they were forced to leave a camp near Toulouse – bear in mind, they were forced to go, they did not leave by themselves, so whose fault is it? – and finally, also in the South near Montpellier, a fire started at a Rroma camp.

Less news on the front page means more on Rroma in the French Press. First, in the South, were legality seems not to be high on the priorities of the state in Montpellier. In that same city, residents are “exasperated” by a camp there. In Montaucran, in the South, a camp was closed; near Paris, two reportages on life in the camps; in Montreuil, camps are being dismantled; in Lyon, a report on the situation of Rroma in that city; in the North the mayor od a twon is accused of racism following the arson attack against a shop for Romanians and especially Rroma, while also in the North, a pedophile was targeting Rroma children.

If there are no news about Rroma in the French Press, there are many about travellers. So many in fact, that one could think that France is literally invaded by travellers. 37 articles, in their great majority about illegal camps … You can judge by yourself:

Illegal camping in Vizille, near Grenoble; illegal camping in Alsace; in St. Hilaire, in Plan de Grasse, in Revel, in Saintes Maxime, in the Ardèche, in Montpellier, in Millau, and in Cabestany, in the South of France; in Western France in the Landes, in Dinant, in Lanton, in les Billaux, in Escources, in Pont de Cé, and in Lespare; in the North of France in Alprecht, in Wattinies, in Dunkerque, in Librecourt, in Le Portel, in Valenciennes, in Meurchin, and in Mazingarbe; in Normandy in Vascoeuil; in the East of France in Epinal, in Jarville, in Neufchateeau, in Saint Vit, and in Dombasle; and finally two articles on potential sites for camping for travellers in the centre of France and near Paris.

The story of a Rromni who came to France, and managed to get out of the Ghetto is being thrown out again. She broke the laws introduced by Sarkozy forbidding begging with children (7 years in jail and up to 100’000 EUR fines), and went to court three times to fight her conviction. And she won!

She is now on the verge of falling back. The French state’s policies are definitively pro integration …

With Football, and with France in the final, there are very few news about Rroma in the Press. Nevertheless, a few items warrant some attention…

Near Paris, children from an illegal camp celebrate the end of the school year; a camp is closed near Paris in St. Denis; Rroma left a camp by themselves in the North; in the Marne region, displaced Rroma are squatting a construction site, hindering work; in Nancy, in the East, tensions are increasing between Rroma and their neighbours; in Lens, in the North, Rroma associations are protesting the inaction of the state; an article about Rroma in Marseilles and their future between two expulsions; and finally, the Council of Europe denounces the human cost of expulsions.

Not many news, between the Euro Football and Brexit, Rroma are in the background. Makes you wonder if they are just used to fill voids in the papers…

Tensions in Alsace, due to evangelical Rroma; neighbours complaints due to illegal camps near Paris; Rroma left a camp near Roubaix in the North; restructuration of a neighbourhood in the North, with an integration village fro Rroma; and in the South a warning of credit card thieves.

When Football is king, there are certainly less news about Rroma. Very few news this week in France. In Loos, in the North, the camp was finally dismantled, and burnt down, only two families found a new lodging; in Annet sur Marne, near Paris, the Rroma left leaving lots of garbage; in Cuges, in the South, the mayor calls for blocking travellers from camping there; and in the Alps, travellers finally left La Vue des Alpes.

On a more positive touch, Médecisn sans Frontières is deeply engaged in the North helping Rroma; and in Sètes, in the South, a story on inclusion in School.

This week’s news summary from France. Not so much, which is not surprising, as there were other news in the front pages.

In Lille, Rroma are told to leave France and to move to another place, to Vauban; in the North again, a difficult cohabitation between local travellers (i.e. Manouches) and Rroma; and a police action and a tumultuous municipal council in Loos, in the North of France.

Then two articles on schools one about the inclusion of migrants, the other about pollution near a school where Rroma are.

And finally, of course the usual crime stories with a reported increase of break in in the West and pickpockets in the South.

French Chronicle …

Surprisingly positive chronicle this week in the French press. Yes there were a few expulsions – mostly travelers, the odd criminal case, but the bulk of articles this week was more on integration and insertion.

First, two articles from Libération, one on the so-called insertion village near Lyon where Rroma are housed and helped to integrate and in the second case, about a young Rrom who now goes to school; then a meeting against “Rromophobia” in Orléans, in Western France and a conference on Rroma in Brittany which will take place in June; an article on the Rroma resistance day; and finally a view on discrimination presented by its young victims.

Then, the more standard things: Expulsions of travelers (note that now one starts speaking about Rroma in this context) in Western France, near Paris, and in Grenoble; and the arrest of two Rroma thieves near Paris.
