Gens du Voyage [Travellers]

Gens du Voyage [Travellers]

The French Press is getting confused … They tend to indiscriminately name Rroma, Manouches, Gitans, as well as autochthonous travellers “Gens du Voyage” which is some cases leads to totally absurd descriptions of “sedentary travellers” etc. All this instead of naming things as they are: Rroma – composed of 40 or so different groups among which the Sinti, but also Lovara, Kalderasha, Manouches (French Sinti), Kale (called Gitans in France), and local travellers which have nothing culturally to do with Rroma. What is so difficult here????

Gens du Voyage – Travellers in France

Several articles are currently going around in France about “Gens du Voyage” – Travellers – who violently protested in Grenoble and near a prison where one of them was incarcerated and who was not allowed to get out of jail for a funeral of someone of his family …

The foreign Press took these travellers as being Rroma. Are they? Are they not? This highlights the issue of a way of life versus a minority. By far not all Rroma travel (think about 12 Mio travellers, we would see them more), and not all travellers are Rroma.

Could Journalists start thinking?

Rivesaltes Camp

An article on the French concentration camp of Rivesaltes. A camp that is often forgotten but was an important one in the South of France.

French Chronicle …

Seems that this week, the chronicle is concentrated in the North and in the Lyon region … A video on Rroma in camp in Lille and in their village of origin; political discussions with Marine le Pen on Rroma in Lille; a report on poverty in Roubaix; Rroma left a camp in Roubaix; Rroma and Iraqi Christians being lodged together in an old presbytery; police action in a camp near Lyon; and finally, the residents of a village are fighting against the arrival of Rroma.

French TV and Reality

The reportage on Rroma made by “Zone Interdite” is exactly as bad as one could expect it. Seems that journalists, when reporting on Rroma do not really think about how representative their samples are … So let’s please interview a few drunk homeless French, and extend this to the whole of France …

France: Rroma Children and School

France: Rroma Children and School

Three articles on Rroma children and schools in France. In one, the destiny of a child who did not make it and dropped out; a second one stating that the state is abandoning children; and a last one about Rroma children “saving” a rural school from closure.

And the by now usual chronicle in France. Actually, changes are happening. One speaks of welcoming migrants, which is new in the press. There was a mobilisation in St. Nazaire (Western France); neighbours helping refugees in the North; a consultation in Orchies in the North on Refugees; refugees being welcomed in the Rhone valley; Iraki Christians and Rroma being welcomed in a catholic parish in the North; while in Metz, Rroma briefly occupied a gym; while the police reports issues near a Rroma ghetto in Lyon.

Mythology …

The French Television M6 will present a documentary on the “mystery” of the Gypsies (Sic!) who live according to their own laws… Already the title doesn’t sound good. Let’s watch.

France: It Seems that Rroma Are Not Popular

France: It Seems that Rroma Are Not Popular

The Rroma circus. “Cirque Romanes” in Paris, seems not exactly popular in the Paris suburbs where it has been located for ages. They are the victims of thefts and depredations on a nearly daily basis.

What is going on?

And the usual French review – more of the same. In Wissous, tensions are rising; in Metz, 23 Rroma are without lodgings; a fire in a camp in Ris Orangis, not surprising since temperatures are dropping and heating is needed; a Turkish tourist was mugged by three young Rroma in the RER in Paris; the site of a dismantled camp near Toulouse is being cleaned out; and more Rroma kids in schools in Dijon.

The endless cycle continues … An unlikely hero in Paris, the voice of the Ghetto Joszef Farkas from La Courneuve; neighbours concerned about Rroma moving in in the Rhone valley; Rroma from la Courneuve re-building their church; imminent expulsion in Saint Denis near Paris; the usual story about exploitation and criminal mendacity in Montpellier – as usual not really as stated; and finally an article on refugees at the Porte de Clichy in Paris.
