More articles this week about Roma. First, on the International Romanes Day, then about Roma themselves.

In Western France, the closure and expulsion in Nantes of a Roma camp results in divisions and oppositions. Parents are protesting the removal of Roma children from school. This is good, as it may start forcing authorities to be a bit more integrative.

Further South, a mayor refuses the authorisation for a photo exhibition about Roma. In the Loire valley, in Angers, the question of the integration of Roma is asked. Then, the usual: Two camps, one near Paris, one in Marseilles have been closed.

Not much news in the French Press about Roma. People in Nantes, in Western France are mobilising to fight against the expulsion of a Roma camp without decent housing alternatives. Other than that, 70 caravans are squatting the parking of a high school in Savoie, and 6 Roma arrested near Paris for a series of burglaries.

Not much this week in France on Roma. This is usual, if there are enough other news… In Toulouse, the 10thedition of Rencont’roms in the Balcanika festival. In Marseilles, schoolchildren not being able to do sports as the sports hall is being squatted by Roma; in the same city, 4 squats were evicted. Near Paris, a large open air garbage dump on the site of a former Roma camp is being cleaned up. Of course, it was all left by the Roma who lived there. Finally, two Romanian Roma who were stealing scrap metal were condemned in Niort.

More news this week about Roma in the French press. First a conference that will take place next week about the Genocide of the Roma during the Holocaust, and its French specificities. This is quite uncommon. In Rezé, in Western France, an open reunion between the mayor, politicians and residents about a project for Roma resulted in insults and threats against politicians. Then, more of the usual news. Near Paris, a camp that was disbanded has turned in a huge open air garbage dump; in another commune around Paris, residents are complaining of the stench created by a Roma camp; in another one, Roma were forced to leave their camp all the while being threatened and insulted by local residents; in Grenoble, a camp was closed; and finally in Strasbourg, an article about row between two Romanian Roma families which ended tragically in an accident.

Not much this week either in France about Roma. Near Paris, Roma in a small camp are facing insults and threats; in Toulouse, another edition of Rencont’roms is planned for mid-November; and finally, an article on pickpockets in Nice, some of which are Romnja.

A presentation by an artist, Tania Magy on Roma art but also on nomadism. Not so great for destroying stereotypes. The Olympic games in Paris are pushing Roma camps outside. Not the effect that was planed. Other news are more of the usual: fires in Roma camps near Paris which are fake news; a caravan exhibition against discrimination near Paris; anger with neighbours near Marseilles; and an unusual reflection that closing camps doesn’t solve the issue in Bordeaux.

Almost nothing this week about Roma in the French Press. An article about racism that mentions that in France, it is mainly directed at Roma and North Africans; repeated fires in a Roma camp near Paris; and finally, travellers camping outside designated areas near Metz.

Not much at all this week in the French press on Roma. A new camp near Nantes is creating waves exasperation among the nearby residents, and of course is also used politically. Other than that, ca shootout in the North of France involving Roma apparently.

All of this in really rightist press. CNEWS  …

An interesting article about Bordeaux wineries employing Roma for the harvest, not all to their advantage. Also in Bordeaux, the closure of two camps. In Montpelier, an exhibition on the German civil right movement; in Grenoble, police intervenes against the installation of Roma in new camps, and in Nantes, a new camp opened.

Not much this week in France on Roma. An article about a camp with miserable living conditions near Strasbourg; a new camp near Saint Nazaire in Western France; an article on the book “Ces voyageurs immobiles (Kumpania. Vivre et résister en pays gadjo)”; and finally, an article about the Arles photographic exhibition  on the Saintes Marie de la Mer pilgrimage.

The usual, unfortunately, this last week in France on Roma.

In Bordeaux, an article on the Podensac camp where Roma who were expulsed from another camp re-settled; A new camp in Ermenonville; in Lyon, neighbour of a new “insertion camp” are protesting against nuisances; and of course, criminality with the theft of copper in Lyon.

Typical news from France this week, unfortunately. Families that lost their homes during the closure of a camp South of Bordeaux have settled in worse conditions in another camp. And an uproar in Nice as a Roma family from Bosnia camps in Nice near a beach…

French Chronicle …

After a quiet week, back to the usual on the press coverage of Roma in France: Lots of garbage left after the closure of a camp near the Roissy airport in Paris; two camps closed near Paris; and finally, the largest Roma camp near Bordeaux will be closed shortly.

Not much this week in France. The French prefect of the Herault, in the South of France, known for his hard stance against Roma camps is on the go. Near Paris, a new camp has been dismantled. And near Nantes two caravans took fire.

Another instance of these “reportages” on French TV on “Gypsy” weddings. Again, they give the impression that all Roma are like this and perpetuate these clichés. In Marseilles, a new “insertion” village for Roma will be created. In Bordeaux, the largest camp was closed. In Strasbourg, politicians bemoan that trying to help Roma is going to cost them the election. Finally, an “article” about criminal Roma on the site of a former TV anchor, Jean Marc Morandini, who was condemned and continued his work on the very rightist CNews.

French Chronicle …

French television followed Roma in Marseilles for 6 months. They say that there are roughly 20’000 Roma who live in ca. 400 camps throughout France. This is correct and prompts the question why they have not been integrated. But on the other hand, these are the Roma, not the others who live in France…

Other news cover the photography exhibition in Arles, with the one about Gitanos; an illegal camp near Lyon; and stolen bronze chains in a cemetery, which, even though the thieves have not been caught, must have been Roma …

French Chronicle …

Mixed bag of news this week on Roma in France. A photo exhibition in Arles on Gitanos with more than 150 photos from Jacques Léonard. Worth seeing. An open letter to Macron, asking him to let the “Tsiganes” live like citizen. The usage of “Tsiganes” in France is still prevalent. An article stating that 1.2 million people are victims of racism in France every year, with of course Roma topping the list. A comic strip on refugees that also highlights Roma, and then the usual: condemnation of young Roma for theft during the recent riots, and an article of the extreme right paper about Roma settlers in the camps.

French Chronicle …

Published by:

Not much this week about Roma in France, which is not surprising in view of the riots that followed the killing of a young man by the police in the Paris suburbs.

A festival in Poitiers focusing on Roma tales, the paramisja, and an article about a “huge” Roma camp (with about 500 inhabitants) which apparently disturbs business.
