Not much this week in France. An article with all stereotypes on Roma on the Cote d’Azur, a camp closed near Paris, and of course the consequence thereof, a new camp being established.

In all those years, for 15 to 20 thousand Roma living in camps, they could have found a better solution …

Racism in France

Really? 38% of French people think that “Islam is a threat to the identity of France” (compared to 44.7% in 2019) or even 45% think that “the Roma live mainly from theft and trafficking” (48 .2% in 2019).

And 37% think that “Jews have a special relationship with money”, up from two years ago (34.1%).

Even if for Roma and Moslems the numbers are better than last year, this statistic is scary.

Not much, but always the same, which is depressing. A camp closed in the north, and as usual, no solution found for its inhabitants; another one closed in Alsace and one in the west in Nantes; and in the dSouth, residents protest against a Roma camp.

More news this week on Roma, unfortunately. Complaints about a Roma camp near Paris; a camp evacuated near Lyon; the aftermath of a fire in a camp near Marseilles and the tricky question of the relocation of people; also in Marseilles, a squat has been closed; a new site for Roma near Nantes; a judgement in Lille, in the North, where a camp will be closed and the action of associations alarmed at the closure of camps.

Not much this week in France. A book on Roma by Nicolas Clément, a volunteer at the Secours Catholique, with the title: “Precariousness for all luggage. Another look at the Roma” (Editions de l’Atelier). As usual, unfortunately, this reinforces the stereotype that all Roma are poor and other stereotypes. Not good.

Other news include the upcoming closure of a squat in Marseilles and the closure of a camp near Nantes.

More of the usual. A camp is being closed in Limeil, another one in Livry sur Seine. Another camp was vacated leaving lots of garbage. All near Paris. In Montpellier, camps are being closed now that the new insertion village has been opened. Near Grenoble, an owner who tried to chase Roma squatters ends up in police custody. And finally, a young Rom is being condemned for aggressions in front of ATMs.

All bad.

In spite of the elections, there was space in the French press for some news on Roma…

A festival, from the 29th of April to May 1st, in Seissan will see some well-known and lesser known artists, and will feature an Egyptian singer, thus contributing to the enduring Egyptian connection of Roma. Other news are more of the usual: In Paris, residents complaining of armed Roma bands near the Camp de Mars; a fire in a camp near Paris; in Annecy, an owner tried to expulse Roma squatters; and finally in Montpellier, the new “transition camp” will soon open and a camp is being closed;

Near a Roma camp in the north of France, there are pestilential odours, which according to Roma activists have nothing to do with the Roma and the camp. Two camps evacuated near Paris, one in Argenteuil, one in Compans, the later with a huge amount of garbage.
