An opinion which we share that the EU and Italy in this particular case should stop the forced evictions of Rroma.
A Rroma organisation, the association of the 21st of July, is challenging the Italian government to close all remaining camps within 5 years and integrate the Rroma who are currently living there. Knowing that the police, the state, and NGOs all benefited from these camps in Italy, this will be a challenge.
Good Luck!
With an emergency measure, the European Court of Human Rights, adopting an emergency measure, ordered the Italian Government not to proceed with the eviction of a disabled Rromni and her daughter from the former paper mill in via Salaria, in Rome, as set out in recent weeks by the Administration Capitoline.
Good!
The current president of the International Romani Union, Normunds Rudevics wrote a letter to the Italian authorities protesting the planned evacuation of a camp with 35 Rroma families near Rome.
Several Italian Rroma organizations are protesting the tender for managing segregated Rroma villages that are meant to replace the current squats. This has already been tried in Italy and is the main reason why there are still so many camps around cities and the capital in particular.
A series of articles was published in Italy in the context of the remembrance day of the Holocaust on the 27th of January, explaining that Rroma were also singled out by the Nazis during World War Two. This is not well known in Italy, so GOOD!
An Italian Footballer, Danielle De Rossi, told another one a “shut up, sh*tty Gypsy”. This has at least started a real discussion on racism and prompted requests of a crack down on such comments and behaviour.
Disgraceful!
Several Rroma families in Milan and Rome are being threatened with eviction. Again, it is one of those situations of camps in Italy that have never been really properly handled nor ever thought over…
BAD …
An article on a Study of the Italian Association “July 21” on what it means living in camps for Rroma in Italy. In that country, these camps are institutionalised and the police, the authorities and NGOs all maintain this status quo.
A MUST READ!
Very few Italian cities and regions respect the law regarding the establishment of round tables for the integration of Rroma. The city of Rome recently finally created such an instrument.
Late, and let’s see if it brings anything.
A group of young integrated Rroma in Italy are fighting against the stereotypes and prejudices they are facing. Well done!
Interesting article on the Rroma camps in Italy and in Rome, and the vested interests that keep them open since years. Needless to say there is money and the mafia there …
All the while the “year of mercy” is being prepared in Rome, Rroma are being evicted and shipped out at an alarming rate by the authorities.
Mercy?
The burial of a Mafia boss in Rome did make it to the press. It was outlandish, and according to the reports, this was a Sinti syndicate… Far from sure, which is why we never published anything on this at all. This article summarises the entire story and asks the right questions. This is scary!
A background article in German on the fact that refugees and migrants are being used by rightists mayors such as in Padova for populist purposes. Their vocabulary is really dangerous.
This has to stop!
Chilling report on Italy and on some of the proposed measures of mayors to prevent refugees, and of course Rroma, from settling in their towns. Bulldozing camps, burning down empty houses, or even building a wall around the town.
Back to the middle ages!
Massimo Bitonci, the mayor of Padova, is literally fuming against refugees and tries by all means to get rid of them. He has also little good to say to Roma in general. This is DANGEROUS.
At long last, the Rroma camps – veritable ghettos that surround the Italian capital will be dismantled. Italian court have found the Rome municipality to be guilty of racial discrimination in the setup of these camps, camps that were established by the municipality, with the police and NGOs.
A new book about the Bulgarian Rroma migration to Italy called “the Silent Migration” was recently published in Italy. The article and book reviews the situation of these migrants in various parts of Italy.
A worthy read!
According to the Council of Europe, and this in spite of what populist politicians claim, there has been no “invasion” of Rroma from Bulgaria and Romania since citizen from these countries have been granted free circulation within the EU. The Council of Europe criticises the “unfounded” numbers cited by the press in the migration debate in several European countries, such as the UK, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.
We wholeheartedly agree!
