A large Roma camp was closed this week in Sainte Luce sur Loire in Western France, prompting many articles in the press. On a more positive note, an article about an “integration village” in the region of Nantes highlights the fact that expulsions are not the right way to deal with Roma camps. Near Paris, a new camp was established in Houilles; in Ris Oranigies, the Roma left their camp for a site that is classified as extremely toxic; along the Marne river, near a Roma camp, a huge clean-up of garbage has been organised; and in Saint Denis, a hospital gives shelters. In the North of France, a house where squatters lived burnt down; a mayor’s tongue slipped – he compared one of his opponent to Roma and it was not meant to be a compliment; an association is ready to collaborate with the prefect; an initiative of a travelling school; and finally an initiative of students who are helping school children.

Uzhgorod City Council’s press service reported that the city has adopted a program for the construction of new neighbourhoods for Transcarpathian Roma. The program is being implemented in accordance with the plan of measures for the implementation of the Strategy for Protection and Integration into the Ukrainian Roma Society until 2020, developed by the Cabinet, the website of the representative authority said.

Although the high rate of Roma unemployment in Central and South-Eastern Europe is often attributed to a low level of education and professional skills, one of the more important reasons is discrimination that prevents Roma from entering the labour market on an equal footing.
Integration into the labour market should be a priority in promoting a full social inclusion. Some steps towards this goal were made by the recently completed two-year international Working Roma project, which included the Novo Mesto Society for the Development of Volunteer Work.
As project coordinator Tina Cigler says, in the Working Roma project, partners from nine European countries have tried to develop new tools to prevent intolerance against Roma in the labour market, thereby increasing their employment prospects. The tools and recommendations were developed on the basis of study visits by partner countries, consultations within different groups and good practices that we detected in our partner countries: Italy, Portugal, Spain, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia, Greece, Malta and the United Kingdom.

Not many news this week in France about Roma. First, an article that shows integration works. Roma who were part of a program around Paris found a job. The French defender of Human Rights, Jacque Toubon, lauded the successes of an insertion village near Paris. Other than that, in Triel sur Seine, residents are fighting for the closure of a Roma camp; a fire in a Roma camp is reported in the North of France; and Roma, while more likely to get measles are also more likely to vaccinate against it, given the opportunity.
Finally, two cases of criminality: Romanian thieves attacking women and card thefts in Western France.

A conference on the theme of Antitziganism and Movies started in Berlin on Wednesday, February 21st. The conference was convened on the back of the controversy of the German television movie “Nelly’s Adventures” which depicted Roma in a negative and stereotypical way. These stereotypes are all too often present in movies as soon as Roma are present. This needs to stop.

The story of the stamp and the note on the passport of a Romni from Romania continues to feed the news. It made it to the Romanian news, where they noted that the German administration effectively defaced property of the Romanian State (yes, the passport). It continues to get coverage in Germany, as it is all too reminiscent of practices of the Nazis.

The German State of Bavaria signed a treaty with the State Association of the Sinti and Roma aimed at achieving a better integration and a reduction of the discrimination they face in that state.

Romani Rose, the President of the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma considers anti-Gypsism as a widespread social problem. According to him, Sinti and Roma still have to fight against exclusion. He also opposed the recognition of several Balkan countries as “safe” for Roma.

Several Roma families are connected to the Casamonica Mafia clan which controls a large part of Rome’s criminal activities. The Carabinieri, have carried out the seizure of 430 assets worth over 4 million euros (including a three-storey building, a prestigious villa and various land on the outskirts of Rome) belonging to the Roma family Di Silvio.
