Quite a few people of the town of Californai (PA) went to see a screening of the movie “our school” by Miruna Coca-Cozma – an excellent movie which highlights the difficulties and racism faced by Roma in Romania.
The town was at the centre of a media frenzy with the arrival of ca 50 Roma refugees from Romania.

The Czech justice dismissed several cases of Internet hate speech submitted by the Rome organisation in the Czech Republic.

According to a recently released statistic, there are 245’800 Roma in the Czech Republic. The region with the highest number was the one of Usti nad Labem, with 68’500.
These statistics are usually very unreliable as many Roma prefer not to declare themselves as such, resulting in an over-representation of Roma living in Ghettos and a lower overall number.

A Roma activist, Cenek Ruzicka, was awarded the Czech Artis Bohemiae Amicis prize for his efforts to remove the pig farm from the Lety concentration site.

The government of Erdogan, having already cleaned the oldest Istanbul Roma neighbourhood (Sulukule) are continuing their policy of expulsions, this time in the Tarlabasi neighbourhood.
There is a clear design to remove all Roma from the city limits.

Roma and Roma organisations protested on the capitol hill against the policies of Italy on camps. They protest the conditions in the camps as well as some of the planned closures that are not accompanied by adequate re-housing measures.

On 22 July 2015 the city of Wrocław levelled the Roma settlement in ul. Paprotna. At the moment of demolition, the settlement consisted of five buildings. Families (adults and children) had been living in these houses since 2009. A complaint to the ECHR was filed in early 2016.
The Roma complainants did not know about the planned demolition of their homes. On the morning of July 22, they left their homes and they were demolished. Consequently, they lost their home and belongings. Some items (such as applaiances and stoves) were misappropriated, and the remaining property, including documents and medicines, was levelled to the ground and dumped into the nearby rubbish dump with the rubble.
The European Court of Human Rights is investigating the case and has send a series of questions to the Polish government.

Romani Rose, from the central Council of German Sinti and Roma strongly condemned the movie “A bras Ouverts” [Hereinspaziert in German] from the French comedian Christian Clavier. We had already reported that in France the movie was also strongly condemned for its stereotypical depiction of Roma.

In Gennevilliers, near Paris, a camp is being dismantled; in Champs sur Marne, the mayor clamours for a French-wide solution to the Roma “issue”; in the North, in Hénin-Beaumont, two camps were closed and the travellers are escorted out by the police; iN Grenoble, an association closes for lack of funds for Roma; and finally a bad stereotype – a Roma pimp arrested in Hungary for crimes (running a prostitution ring) in France.

It seems that Slovakia only sends Roma children for adoption abroad… This can definitively be qualified as state racism. The director of the Centre for International Children and Youth Protection Andrey Císarová, states that “international adoption is recommended by LEN children who have Roma ethnicity and are [thus] not interesting in Slovakia”.

István Kamarás, a Hungarian Roma who fled to Canada and came back to the country, is advocating the idea of an autonomous Roma province in North Eastern Hungary. His main argument is the current corruption among the distribution of the EU funds for Roma and the inefficiency of Roma politicians in Budapest.
