It seems that when it comes to Roma, both Russians and Ukrainians revert to stereotypes. This time, Ukrainian press on Roma squatting a railway station in the capital. They do not even bother to mention that these are apparently refugees from the Dombas.

Two Russian language articles on Roma who are camping in a railway station in Kiev. Both extremely critical of the Roma and definitively portraying them with all stereotypes, including using verbs like “polluting” etc… In brief, quite racist.
These same papers have been very critical of the Ukrainians for not doing anything on the attacks and here, do not dwell on the fact that these Roma are from Donetsk, and, like many others have been driven out of the region by the separatists.

Two Russian language articles on Roma in the Ukraine. Basic statement therein: Roma have difficulties in finding jobs, and thus they have many children and live of the money they receive for them from the social service.
All stereotypes are present here and of course it generalises … Fact is, there are many integrated Roma in the Ukraine. There are also many Roma refugees from the Dombass, they were driven out and have not been allowed to return. And in Western Ukraine, in the former parts of the Austro Hungarian Empire, the Roma situation is really bad.

Lots of cultural events this week in France on Roma – and very little negative news. First, a projection of a movie on a Roma camp in Nantes. The movie is presented on the site of that former site, before it is developed. Projection of another movie on Roma in Arles. The exhibition “Mondes Tsiganes” in Paris, with many photographs. That exhibition is not in the right place (in the museum of migration) and is definitively fuelling clichés. Concert of a Slovakian Roma group in the South of France. Then the more usual news: A fire in a camp in Montreuil; a new squat of a empty house near Paris; and, surprise, a positive experiment in Marseilles, where Roma are lodged in apartments …

The Society for Threatened People and the Association of Sinti and Roma Switzerland have lodged a complaint against a SVP (right wing populist party) politician for racism and incitation to racial hatred for his comments on Roma travellers.

Is it a trend? Or is it a change? The news this week on Roma in France are definitively different. Education, about a Romni in Montreuil fighting for the enrolment of Roma children in school; help, with a story of students of a prestigious French university (Science Po) devoting time to Roma in Poitiers; a Roma manifestation in Nice about the living conditions in Romania; a movie about a Roma family; an integration centre is being discussed in the North of France and one opened near Paris in Ivry; and then the usual news, a fire in a camp in the North, and a camp closure near Paris.
Finally, racism in France with Moslems and Roma coming on the top of the league … A depressing pattern in Europe.

Another article on bride selling – this time in Croatia, a country where racism runs anyhow high. Again, the right question is not being asked: Is it “selling” or is it an early wedding with the Vlach tradition of paying the father of the bride.

A survey on the situation of Roma by the United Nations Development Program and the World Bank, supported by the European Commission in the Western Balkan, while showing some progress highlighted high unemployment (up to 80%) and continuing discrimination.
As usual, these studies need to be taken with a grain of salt as they never include integrated Roma – tilting the results.
