More on the Attacks in Spain

The National Human Rights Platform, the Faith and Hope Religious Congregation and the Esperanza Gitana Union for Humanity, together with relatives of the alleged murderer of the 19-year-old who died in Íllora (Granada), have filed a letter with the Government Subdelegation to denounce “racist and xenophobic acts” for the assaults against some Roma homes and vehicles following the murder of the 19-year-old.

Sad story.

Rostock, 30 years ago

Thirty years ago, a massive racist pogrom took place in Rostock Lichtenhagen. It was mostly directed at Vietnamese immigrants but also touched a few Roma.

It highlighted the existent of violent racism in Germany, something that has unfortunately continued. Other lessons, such as how the police should intervene have been learnt.

The Spanish Gitana Society and the Federation of Gitana Women have filed a complaint against the mayor of Íllora (Granada), Antonio Salazar, for alleged incitement to hatred after the violent death of a 19-year-old boy at the town festivals. The incitement concerns acts by citizen who have detained a 23-year-old Gitano, and for the damage to Roma homes the municipality of Poniente de Granada.

Specifically, the Federation of Gitana Women considers the alderman “promoter and instigator” of the assaults registered in the town against several Gitana families and has even requested his arrest.

According to the Spanish Gitana Society, these are “serious crimes”, which “have been generated against Gitana families”, for which they ask that the mayor be “immediately arrested”.

These attacks are becoming more frequent is Spain.

Slovenian Pilgrimage

Roma have been participating in this pilgrimage in Brezje, Slovenia for a century. Usually set a week before Mary’s Assumption day, during the festivities, they help carry the image of Mary from the church to a nearby park and back to church, a trip symbolizing the search for an abode that Mary and Josef had to do.

After two years where the feast was cancelled because of Corona, it takes place again. But the local authorities do not want to provide a place where the Roma could stay during the pilgrimage, in fact, preventing them from attending. This is bad, but in view of the general view of Roma in Slovenia, not surprising.

Hungary, Embassies, and Minorities

The embassies of almost all EU countries in Budapest – with the exception of Cyprus, Croatia and Malta -, several European countries outside the EU, as well as the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Mexico signed a joint statement published on the Roma Holocaust Memorial Day.

The message obviously refers to the recent Orban speech and criticises it implicitly.

“On August 2, on the occasion of the Roma Holocaust Memorial Day, we remember with sadness the tragic genocide that caused the death of hundreds of thousands of European Roma. Unfortunately, the seeds of racist ideology still exist and thrive in 2022. However, these ideologies are not only incorrect, they are also dangerous: they must be eradicated so that a culture based on equality and respect for human dignity can take their place. Diversity is not just an attribute to be tolerated, but a cause to be celebrated, as it brings strength and benefit to all of us. We join the voices of all those who condemn xenophobia, discrimination and all forms of racism, and we stand together with the individuals and communities who have suffered the ideologies of hatred and division.”

Really? 38% of French people think that “Islam is a threat to the identity of France” (compared to 44.7% in 2019) or even 45% think that “the Roma live mainly from theft and trafficking” (48 .2% in 2019).

And 37% think that “Jews have a special relationship with money”, up from two years ago (34.1%).

Even if for Roma and Moslems the numbers are better than last year, this statistic is scary.

These data come from the Croatian Government Office for Human Rights and National Minorities, according to which more and more Roma children remain in the school system. They graduate from university, become lawyers, but often do not find work due to racism.

Stanislav Křeček, the current Czech ombudsman and former ČSSD politician, is, to put it mildly, extravagant. Critics blame him for ignoring his agenda and not understanding it at all. Křeček became famous for his statements about the fact that Roma discrimination does not exist in the Czech Republic – that is, in a country that has already lost before the European Court of Human Rights due to Roma segregation.

He should be removed from office.
