Switzerland: Travelling Roma

Quite a few articles in the Swiss Press on the presentation of a report by the Society for Threatened People (Geselschaft für bedrohte Völker) on the situation of travelling Roma in Switzerland. Key tenor in the Press, the police is agrees that one of the main issues ais the lack of proper camping sites for these travellers.

UK: Complaints Dismissed

A formal complaint against the Judge in a slavery affair has been dismissed. The Judge while condemning the Traveller’s family for a really horrid slavery case, made generalising comments about all Travellers and Roma.

Blanket Debate in the UK

In Gennevilliers, near Paris, a camp is being dismantled; in Champs sur Marne, the mayor clamours for a French-wide solution to the Roma “issue”; in the North, in Hénin-Beaumont, two camps were closed and the travellers are escorted out by the police; iN Grenoble, an association closes for lack of funds for Roma; and finally a bad stereotype – a Roma pimp arrested in Hungary for crimes (running a prostitution ring) in France.

Italy: Still Waiting

The Italian National Congress of Roma, Sinti and Travellers protested on the capitol to ask for the administration to close the Castelromano camp and for a real social inclusion plan. The locals complain of extreme conditions in terms of hygiene, with diseases spreading especially among the many children. “We ask the mayor to close immediately Castelromano. Conditions are no longer viable,” said Luigi Hamidovic, representative of the Roma community in Castelromano.
