As usual … A short presentation of Roma by l’Express mixes a few correct facts (Indian origins) with total BS, assimilating the Roma as a whole to the Vlach Roma from Romania, stating that they starting arriving in Europe in the 1980’s (in fact they arrived about 80 years earlier) etc…

Few news this week on Roma in France. The main one is the one of a video which is a fake and purportedly shows a Rom aggressing a bus driver in the North of France before being beaten up. The video was shared over 240’000 times! Near Paris, a drunken mayor was arrested after having threatened Roma. He was drink, wore a Japanese sword and had a gun with him.
The rest of the news are more like the usual ones: A camp on Triel sur Seine will be dismantled, the illegal dump attributed in part to Roma in the Yvelines is still a hot topic, and also near Paris, a fight between Roma has one of them landing in a hospital.

Zigeunerschnitzel

The young socialists in Szitwerland want to forbid the term “Zigeunerschnitzel” – a form of grilled meat. The controversy went further and led to discussions about a festival in Switzerland organised by the “Fahrendes Zigeuner Kulturzentrum” – a Jenische Organisation that has been organising events for the last 30 years. The action is now being extended to the use of “Zigeuner” a term which is definitively derogatory.

This can only be qualified as science fiction or pure propaganda. Turkey is “continuing” to support Roma to improve their living standards.
Well, this is one of the most racist societies in Europe and they have ben evicting Roma from the centre of the cities (like the Roma neighbourhood of Sulukule in Istanbul etc.). Police has been conducting violent raids in other places and so on. The list is long.

Slovakia: Lunik IX

The Lunik IX housing estate in Košice has a very bad reputation: It is a rundown neighbourhood of decaying buildings mostly if not entirely inhabited by Roma. There are now plans to destroy some of the worst buildings and to beautify the neighbourhood hoping to create a mixed society.
Let’s not hope it turns out like most gentrification projects, simply evicting Roma.

Slovakia, Research and Child Pornography

David Scheffel, a Thompson Rivers University Professor (close to Vancouver, Canada) has been arrested on charges of child pornography, sexual offences and even arm trafficking. He denies the charges claiming that they stem from his study of child prostitution among Roma in Slovakia. The professor is reputed to be an expert on Roma culture.
