One of the few camping places for travelling Rroma and Sinti in Germany will be closed. The Roma and Cinti Union, who has been running this camp, has been informed they will have to leave it until October.
A Swiss commune is up in arms to protest against a newly planned “transit” camp for foreign travellers, aka Rroma in Switzerland. There are few places for Rroma travellers in Switzerland, as other camping spots are increasingly forbidden to Rroma. Effective segregation, even though these camps are often under utilised.

Further protests in Germany by Rroma in order not to be deported. This is still the continuation of the declaration of several Balkan countries such as Bosnia and Kosovo as being “safe countries” also for minorities such as Rroma.

Police in the Netherland has apparently uncovered 4 networks trafficking Rroma children for theft and begging. Apparently, the children are meant to steel 1’000 EUR per day. Some of these children had been placed under supervision in Holland and were found in Spain. The story seems true, unfortunately. To be followed.
Small scandal in Rome again in the administration of the Rroma camps around the capital. The police arrested several people for corruption, kickbacks and bribes regarding these camps. And this time not the Rroma.
It shows how much vested interests exists NOT to solve the problem…
The new mayor of Rroma, Virginia Raggi, wants to close the Rroma camps around the capital. Nice thoughts, but is the will there? These camps were run by politics, NGOs, and the police, to some profit, apparently …

Nice work, but this is exactly what perpetuates the stereotypes when not presented in context. This is a minority in a specific country where the villages are still mostly closer to the 19th than to the 21st centuries.

Children were removed by court order from a Rroma family in Ireland. The children had lice, ringworm, little to eat. All the signs of poverty. Not much that is Rroma specific. Yet, this is what comes out of the article.

It is with great sadness that we have to announce that Lev Tcherenkov (Cherenkov), a friend, a scholar, with whom we worked for the last 24 years recently passed away. Born on October 12th, 1936 originally from Lithuania, he passed away after a long illness on April 16th, 2016 in Moscow. He is survived by his wife and his son.

Lev worked all his life with and for Rroma. Himself a Rrom (Litovsko) he was one of the best specialists on Rromanes and published numerous articles and a few books. Besides all dialects of Rromanes, he also spoke most European languages and a few beyond. He initially studied at Moscow University and he lastly works as a senior researcher in the Russian Institute for the preservation of the cultural and natural heritage in Moscow, and was the institute’s specialist for Rroma and their culture. He was member of the board of the Rroma Foundation from 1992 until 2005, and continued to work for the Foundation until his death. He also had long lasting cooperation with Romano Centro in Austria and with Moses Heinschink especially, as well as with the Institute of Language Science of the University of Graz, especially with Prof. Dieter Halwachs.He was a pioneer in using the language, Rromanes, as a source of history and as a tool to trace the migration of the Rroma from India to Europe. His historical linguistic theories were vindicated by more recent means in several genetic studies telling the same story: Rroma have been in Europe for over a thousand years, are all from the very same migration, and have remained remarkably united in spite of having spread all over the continent.
We sincerely grieve the loss of a friend, a scholar, and a wonderful man.
