In one of the largest Roma housing estates in Slovakia, Lunik IX, Roma did not go and vote for the Slovak Presidential elections. People say they would have gone if there were Roma candidates.

Well, they missed an opportunity to express their views. That is a pity.

An association that is being accused of preventing the closure of a Roma camp has been denied subsidies; a large police action against drug dealers and burglars in Nantes, focusing on a Roma camp; and near Toulouse, the closure of two illegal camps.

An article about the open bills left by Roma and travellers in a camp in Maontova, Italy. Apparently, they left unpaid electricity bills, tapped illegally in the electrical system, did not pay the fees for camping etc. All this amounting to more than 400’000 euros.

Not good.

Prague 3 and Roma

Another article about Roma living in Prague’s 3rd neigbourhood. Roma feel safe in Prague 3, but they encounter prejudices in the commercial housing market. This was shown by the research of the city district among the local Roma population. A Roma counselor helps with the solution of specific problems and the support of Roma culture, a position that Prague 3 provides as the only district in the capital. Current advisor Veronika Polášková will continue in her role.

Bologna, Fashion, and Roma

On Saturday 6 April at 8.30pm, in Bologna, the DumBO Workshop welcomes the ‘Rom (antico) Fashion Show’, a fashion show in which the designer of Sinti origins Noell Maggini will present a selection of his creations. Born in Prato, 29 years old, Maggini creates tailor-made couture collections and garments, which are designed, cut and made by hand.

“It will be my first fashion show in Bologna and I am very curious – explained Maggini – I brought my models to Florence at Pitti Uomo and to Milan Fashion Week, but Bologna is an important city for fashion, experimentation and new trends, and it is also the city where the Romani presence was recorded for the first time in Italy in the 15th century”. With ateliers and showrooms in Prato, the Maggini brand sells throughout Italy.

Uzhhorod: Online Museum on Genocide

On Wednesday, April 3, Uzhgorod hosted the presentation of the online museum “Poraimos na Transcarpathia”, which presents exhibits of one of the most tragic pages in the history of the Roma – the genocide during the Second World War. The creators of the museum are convinced that future generations should remember the tragic pages of history so that such manifestations of inhumane treatment never happen again.

The celebration of the International Day of the Roma start today with a conference in the Brožík room of the Old Town Hall focused on the future of financing Roma art and culture.

“Unfortunately, Roma culture is still perceived primarily as community entertainment. This approach has far-reaching effects on many levels, of which, in addition to the social one, for those of us who deal with our culture professionally, the financial level is the most sensitive,” says David Tišer, Roma activist, director and director of the organizing association Ara Art.

An article in the Slovak press on the origins of the International day of the Roma. April 8 was established as International Roma Day in 1990 near Warsaw at the Fourth World Roma Congress organized by the International Romani Union (IRU). The choice of this day was related to the commemoration of the first worldwide Roma meeting in April 1971 in Orpington near London.

Now why did they put a picture of young Indian girls on the article? The picture is a stock photograph that has been used numerous times in conjunction with various topics about India. Bad journalism…

Slovak Presidential Elections

Non-parliamentary parties Democrats, Democratic Party, Forum, Modrí – ES, ODS – Citizens’ Democrats of Slovakia, Roma Coalition Party have agreed on a common procedure in the second round of the presidential elections. On Tuesday, at a joint press conference, they officially expressed their support for the civil candidate for president, Ivan Korčok.
