The International Roma Song Day was organized again this year. The aim of the international movement is to bring together the gypsy communities, culture and folklore scattered throughout Europe, and present it to society as a whole. On the occasion of International Youth Day, which was declared by the United Nations on August 12 in 1999, Združenje Epeka, a social enterprise from Maribor, on the island of Maribor prepared, as they called it, an event entitled Green knowledge for young people: on the way to sustainable world.

The event “Roma to your city” was held for the first time in 2011. “This is the eleventh presentation of Romani culture in front of the people of Piroć in this way,” says Silvija Nešić from UG “Ternipe” and adds that the event represents a platform for the promotion and respect of Romani culture, gathering talented young Romani men and women. “Over the years, the conditions for the promotion and development of Roma culture have been created, and soon, with this goal, a Roma cultural centre will be opened in Pirot,” says Nešićeva.

The tree fell over in a strong wind, but not completely – the crown of the tree was above the road and was trimmed by the city services – explains Przemysław Piwecki from the city guard. The cut off boughs and branches were left on the side of the road, and Roma took that wood.

Lawyers of the European Roma Rights Center (ERRC) and the Forum for Human Rights (FORUM) filed a lawsuit with the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) against the Czech Republic over the death of Roma Stanislav Tomáš during a police intervention in Teplice in 2021. The Czech Constitutional Court rejected a complaint by the organization in April 2023. The case before the court is being conducted on behalf of the surviving family member of the deceased Roma.
The US Embassy in Moldova congratulated activist Victorina Luca on receiving the Global Anti-Racism Hero Award. She is the first member of the Roma Council for the Prevention of Discrimination and Ensuring Equality.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken noted that her work to end discrimination in Moldova and protect the interests of the Moldovan Roma community is an example for everyone. “We honour Victorina and all human rights defenders and are proud to work with them to solve current problems and build a more democratic, prosperous and secure future in Moldova,” Blinken said at the award ceremony.
