Not much on Roma this week in France. A socialist mayor of the North of France is calling for a manifestation to protest the illegal camps of Travellers (Mostly Roma – French Manouches, Lovara and Kalderaša). In Marseilles, the president of the largest soccer club invites 20 Roma children to watch a soccer game. Near Marseilles, the presentation of a book on Roma and their integration will take place on the 24th of May. Another article on the controversial exhibition in Paris – full of praise thereof, unfortunately. Finally, yet another camp is going to be closed.

Djudjevan in Berlin

The Berlin police intervened last Sunday in a park after finding a group of Roma roasting entire lambs on a spit for Djudjevan. They had to leave but other than that, no further actions were taken. The Roma were from Croatia and Bosnia.

Ede and Unku

A German Sinto, a distant relative of Unku, a Sintica who died in Auschwitz, recently wrote the continuation the book Ede and Unku. That book told the story of a friendship between a worker and a Sintica and was forbidden by the Nazis in 1933.

Roma and Sinti are being described as “Invaders” in Italy in the press. The news are full of the use of “Invasion”, but, according to the Association “21 July”, the Roma and Sinti in Italy number about 180,000, of which about 26 thousand live in an emergency housing. One should add that these living in the camps have actually been prevented by the Italian state from settling properly and kept in camps for many decades.

UK, Roma, and Sexual Exploitation

According to social workers, Roma children need translators to fend of the risk of sexual exploitation.
Very good, and certainly a good idea in some case. But this leaves an aftertaste: It implies Roma children are at greater risk of being sexually exploited. Is this not actually the case of any child from a poor family and with a poor knowledge of English or simply not yet well integrated? Would the same article be written about people of African origins?

Near Paris, in Melun, the Roma who had been lodged in a former hospital are being threatened with expulsion. In Ablon-Vigneux, residents are demanding the closure of a camp. In Eastern France, in Strasbourg, a new idea to fight against shantytown is being investigated. In the North, in Roubaix, finally, the interview of a doctor who serves the poor Roma from the city.

Italy and Roma

Giorgio Halilovic was born on August 12, 1982 in Rome in a camp and was the beneficiary of a EU funded program on integration. In the afternoon of April 12th, 2018, he was arrested by the police, transferred to the Office of the Police Headquarters of Rome and officially expelled from Italy. The next day he was put on an airplane and taken to Sarajevo, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country he had never been to.
This is the new policy of the Five Star movement and of the Rome Mayor Raggi.
