Ukraine – House Arrests

Four people are under house arrest in Lviv for the murder against a Rom last June. This definitively seems mild in comparison of the crime. Several of the perpetrators are minors and go to school. They also only face mild penalties (3 to 7 years of jail).

Very few news on Roma in the French Press this week. First, a map of Lille, in the North of France on the Roma camps to understand the expulsions during the summer of 2018. It clearly shows that the closure of two large camps resulted in many more smaller ones being created. So much for expulsions … Near Paris, a manifestation for Roma who live in a camp that may be closed; the winter pause of expulsions saving a camp; and a clean-up action following a closure. Finally, in Avignon, three Roma schoolchildren live under a tent.

Alice Weidel, of the German far right party AfD pulled out of an event at the Oxford Union following a controversy on her appearance there due to racists comments she has made in Germany. For example there were reports that Weidel had written that Germany was being “overrun by culturally alien peoples such as Arabs, Sinti and Roma”.
