The Dutch are speaking about Roma victims of the Holocaust. This time from Den Bosch, where 51 Roma were transferred in May 1944 to a camp where all but 13 died.

In 2009, several policemen were accused of having abused Roma after their arrest in Košice. The case has been in court ever since. The appeal court effectively cleared the policemen in a controversial judgement staing that the testimonies of the victims were contradictory.
The regional court of Košice cancelled the verdict from the appeal court and referred the case back to the lower court.

According to social workers, Roma children need translators to fend of the risk of sexual exploitation.
Very good, and certainly a good idea in some case. But this leaves an aftertaste: It implies Roma children are at greater risk of being sexually exploited. Is this not actually the case of any child from a poor family and with a poor knowledge of English or simply not yet well integrated? Would the same article be written about people of African origins?

An EU program has been helping Roma to enter politics at every level of the Portugese government.
Roma in Portugal are still very much discriminated and stereotypes against them are deeply ingrained.

Members of the Roma band “Pasrno Grast” were refused entry in a disco in Budapest on most probably on the grounds of them being Roma. This in spite of the fact that the band is well known in Hungary and its concerts are attended by many non-Roma Hungarians.
Unfortunately, not surprising in Hungary.

A controversy erupted in Slovakia about subsidies for culture. The Slovak Fund for the Promotion of the Culture of National Minorities set money aside for the Roma. It now turns out that the organisations whose members sat on the committee for the attribution of these funds received a large part of them.
Young Roma signed a petition and pointed out that several of these organisations did not have their headquarters clearly identified and did not really engage in the activities for which they received funds.

The rapid fall of unemployment in Slovakia is helping Roma: They are increasingly being hired. Currently, one estimates that there are around 100’000 unemployed Roma in the country.

An essay by Assistant Professor of Pedagogy – Intercultural Education at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki – Greece. His view is that there is no such thing as “Roma” and that Roma are a collection of distinct groups.
Well, we are leaning more towards the theories of Roma Nation that he cites as being wrong …

The Roma Monitoring Report, prepared for the European Commission notes several cases of blatant segregation in the Slovak school system. Children are put in special school (nothing new), and teachers of such schools were even documented offering bribes to the parents to get the children in their schools. In many cases, the children were almost automatically “diagnosed” with mental illness, boosting the revenue of the school.
Clearly, these schools do not do much in matters of education.

A new video of an attack against Roma – this time arson – surfaced in Ukraine. This shortly after the Pogrom that was widely commented. Here, people are seen setting fire to a flat in a privately owned house occupied by Roma.

C14, the group that attacked the Roma camp in Kiev last week originally posted photos on Facebook claiming that they had simply gone to the site to collect garbage. Only later did the videos of the attacks emerge, some of them posted by C14th members.
