Stereotypes

Published by:

An article about a Roma wedding in the Czech town of Jirkov highlights the views of the majority on Roma and some of the stereotype: “A wedding that you don’t usually see. Romani brides and grooms Patrícia and Radek from the Czech town of Jirkov in the Chomutov district did not leave the preparation for the most beautiful day of their lives to chance and pulled out all the stops. Their wedding was exactly as it should be for Roma – luxurious and quite noisy!”

Tomáš Kačo

The Czech pianist Tomáš Kačo, a Rom who was born in a family with 11 children. He grew up in the ghetto, personally experienced prejudice against the Roma. Nevertheless, he was able to succeed, including the opportunity to perform at the legendary Carnegie Hall. According to him, the key to change is an open mind: “Whether it’s a different food, a different smell, a different race, whenever there is something new and different, they are afraid of it,” says the pianist and composer about the Czechs. According to him, it is important to realize that both parties are to blame for every problem: “I don’t want to say that this is just a majority company, that it is not open. The same thing works with the Roma, the minority, they are not open either. They have barriers, prejudices given by their parents.”

Czech Ombudsman

Czech Ombudsman

Stanislav Křeček, the current Czech ombudsman and former ČSSD politician, is, to put it mildly, extravagant. Critics blame him for ignoring his agenda and not understanding it at all. Křeček became famous for his statements about the fact that Roma discrimination does not exist in the Czech Republic – that is, in a country that has already lost before the European Court of Human Rights due to Roma segregation.

He should be removed from office.
