Fairly harsh critique of Miloš Zeman, the current Czech president in the Slovak press. In a visit in a small community, Kojetín in the Olomouc region, and upon learning that the locals were afraid about unemployed Roma moving to their town, he chipped in:
“I am definitely not a friend of Communism, but during Communism the Roma had to work. Mostly they worked like dredgers, and when they refused to work, they went to jail”

A retrospective of Josef’s Koudelka’s photograph can be seen in Prague. Besides having documented the Societ invasion of 1968, he also did an iconic work on Roma.
A must see.

A simple argument between children at a pool in the Czech Republic turned into a brawl between Roma and Gadže. Here’s the view from the Romni whose child was involved in the initial dispute.

The portrait of Ladislav Baláz, a militant against hate violence. The story is part of the Roma Memory Project which tries to present the fate of the Roma living in the Czech Republic today and to present the history of the Roma from the war to the present times through their own eyes.

Ladislav Baláž was born in Karviná in 1957. He was trained as a mechanic and worked as a professional driver. After the revolution he worked in the Roma Citizens’ Initiative, and from the end of the 1990s, he was engaged in the fight against hate violence. He was forced to emigrate to Great Britain due to threats, and he returned after years to continue the fight against racist attacks on the Roma.
