The Aurora café in Budapest, a Jewish café originally has turned into a centre of resistance for opposition activists of minorities. It houses the offices of a Roma NGO, of the LGBT community, and of course of various Jewish groups.
Let’s hope it can continue.

Orban and World War Two

Vikotor Orban praised Hungary’s World War Two leader – Horthy – who led a government which oversaw the deportation of almost all of the Jews from Hungary and who was profoundly racists, also against Roma.

New Hungarian Laws and Rroma

The current laws targeting NGOs and the CEU in Hungary are a danger to the Rroma inclusion in Hungary. Several NGOs working for Rroma, the Roma Education Fund, the European Roma Right Centre, etc. are directly funded by Soros and would need to be labelled “foreign agents” as per the new law. This is not good.

A White House aide, Sebastian Gorka, endorsed the Magyar Garda, a paramilitary group related to the extreme rightist Hungarian party, Jobbik. The Garda has been involved in racist acts against Rroma, but also against Jews and the LGBT community.

A Play on Rroma

Drom, a theatre play on Rroma born from a collaboration between Rroma and non-Rroma, is focusing on the road from Novi-Sad to Berlin as a metaphor for the route for escaping poverty and discrimination in the Balkan.
The play will be presented in Budapest in April.

Hungary highest court overturned a lower court judgement that had ruled in favour of the plaintiffs in a case of harassement of the Rroma minority. The case was filed by the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union against the police of the Heves County, arguing that during the events in Gyöngöspata where extreme right militants manifested in the middle of a Rroma quarter, the police violated the Rroma’s civil rights by not preventing this march.
