A sad tale of the sole source of water – a well – in a Roma shantytown which was polluted, essentially because some of the “dry toilets”, i.e. a hole in the ground got flushed by heavy rains.

A reportage on Ukrainian media in Slovakia – in Košice in the Lunik IX neighbourhood – and a reflection of Roma in Europe. What is positive is that they say that the integration of Roma is more of a problem of the majority than of the Roma. What is less so is that they say idiocies (that Roma lived in tent prior to the creation of the “vertical” ghettoes) and that they push a whole series of stereotypes.

The head of the Federal National-Cultural Autonomy of Russian Gypsies told the press that the authorities pay little attention to the Roma, and that the media only write about them in a negative light. In Russia, the number of those who approve the slogan “Russia for Russians” has increased according to the Levada Center poll, which states that the share of citizens supporting such a statement has grown from 10 to 19%. As the “360” TV channel notes, the number of those who favour restriction of the rights of Roma to live in Russia has increased especially from 17 to 32%.

Minister of Labour Ján Richter has repeatedly said that there are many Roma in Slovakia who want to work, only companies have many prejudices against them.
The most recent analysis of the Institute of Financial Policy at the Ministry of Finance shows that most of the work Roma do does not really benefit the state ad that the measures to help Roma find work are inadequate.

Rastislav Trnka, in early July, the president of Kosice Self-governing, filed a criminal complaint regarding a bribe he was offered and for the intimidation he has been subjected to related to the mismanagement of funds in the case of an education program in Sečovcia, which belongs to the Unesco School in Dobšin. Trnka said the operation of program was too costly for the region and there were suspicions of breaching the law. It is unfortunately a program aimed at integrating Roma …

A Slovak sociologist, Jarmila Lajčáková, Center for Research on Ethnicity and Culture says that gifted young Roma often do not go to college because they lack money or self-confidence. she created a program to help Roma prepare for admission exams and then graduate from the University of Economics in Bratislava.
