“Roma Heroes” is the second internationally organised theatre festival for Independent held May 24-27, 2018, at the Studio K Theatre (1092 Budapest, Ráday u. 32). The aim of the special cultural event is to draw attention to Roma drama and story-telling, as well as to the situation of Roma communities, by exemplifying individual fate and by highlighting everyday challenges. Eight contemporary European works will be presented at the festival.

This latest attack targeted a permanent settlement and not, as in the case of Kiev, a temporary one.

On Sunday, May 13th, a commemoration was held for the victims of the Holocaust on the site of the former concentration camp of Lety. The pig farm that stood on the camp site was closed very recently and this is the first time the commemoration can be held there.

The Hungarian Romni, lawyer and former member of the parliament, Viktoria Mohacsi, was granted asylum in Canada. Her application had been initially dismissed in 2016/2017. She fled to Canada in 2011 following her criticisms of the handling of the case of the Roma murders in several localities at the time in Hungary.

A study on ethnic hostility has been conducted in Eastern Slovakia. The results (albeit on a small sample of 327 youngsters) showed clearly that people in a group showing hostility towards a minority (in this case Roma) were more inclined to do so themselves.

Not really sure about an exhibition in Slovakia entitled “Red Skirt” and retracing the way Roma have dressed in the country from their arrival in the middle ages to last century. The difficulty here is always the stereotypes and their perpetuation.

The Berlin police intervened last Sunday in a park after finding a group of Roma roasting entire lambs on a spit for Djudjevan. They had to leave but other than that, no further actions were taken. The Roma were from Croatia and Bosnia.

The Ukrainian police announced at last that they have identified suspects in the violent closing of a Roma camp in Kiev on April 21st.
They had trouble explaining what took them so long with the number of videos produced by the criminals themselves …

A controversy is brewing in Slovakia on the allocation of subsidies for the culture of minorities. A commission was created to allocate the funds, but its members associations and families were allowed to bid for subsidies. Not good and bad publicity.

28% of the Roma in Croatia feel discriminated against… Only?
Most of the Roma in Croatia came after the War as the Ustaša killed almost all Croatian Roma during the war.

In 2009, several policemen were accused of having abused Roma after their arrest in Košice. The case has been in court ever since. The appeal court effectively cleared the policemen in a controversial judgement staing that the testimonies of the victims were contradictory.
The regional court of Košice cancelled the verdict from the appeal court and referred the case back to the lower court.
Good, let’s hope this continues!
