Ukraine and Roma

Published by:

The Council of Europe chided Ukraine on the continuing discrimination of Roma in that country. The Advisory Committee recommends that the Ukrainian authorities immediately enact appropriate legislation to protect national minorities; promote respect and fight against = stereotypes in political discourse and society as a whole; provide firm legal guarantees for the protection and use of all minority languages; help in stopping the constant segregation of Roma children in schools and ensuring that the rights of national minorities will not be limited due to changes in administrative boundaries.

It is good but …

Good intentions – getting poor Roma children to school, wrong presentation, especially for Bulgaria. This country had until recently one of the most integrated Roma minority with many of them having completed higher education.
Roma in Bulgaria are Orthodox or Moslems. Why convert them? Religion and humanitarian help are not the best friends.

Hungary, Ministers, and the Election

Published by:

With the elections nearing in Hungary, the propaganda becomes more and more rabid. A Fidesz candidate now fears that Moslems will take over Hungarian cities (really), and, the part that concerns us, the super minister of Human Resources, Zoltan Balog, made a statement son television saying that government funds earmarked to help integrate the Roma may have to be spent on immigrants instead, if migrants are allowed into to Central and Eastern Europe. This is an attempt at swaying Roma voters to Fidesz.

Prague: New Roma Library

Published by:

Roma scholar Ethel Brooks, professor at the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and Department of Sociology at Rutgers University in New Jersey, published last year “Europe is ours”. It sets out clearly against the cultural apartheid and accepted exploitation society the Roma face across Europe, referring to the movement of Roma-futurism, which it regards as a way to freedom. In February, the Roma-futurismo Library (Dittrichova 13/349, Prague 2) opened in Prague, making accessible the works of Roma authors and titles related to the issues of emancipation of discriminated ethnicities and cultures. The library also serves as a meeting place for cultural and political topics.

“We are confronted with a growing demand for employing Roma from excluded communities, due to the lack of low-skilled labour in the market” said Pontis Foundation program manager Beáta Fekiačová. The aim of the meeting was to present a set of steps for companies that have chosen to employ marginalized Roma or want to resolve the obstacles they have.

Canada, Czech Roma, and Theft

Police in Toronto has arrested a Czech refugee – possibly a Romni – who, according to the report may be a member of a ring of Roma purse snatchers.
Well, why is ethnicity an important factor in information about crime? Is there a difference between a Gadžo and a Rom purse snatcher? Not really – then why write it?

Slovakia: An Osada Issue

Published by:

The Roma Osada (settlement) in the village of Kolačkov, in North Eastern Slovakia is threatened by a landslide as the hillslope above it is slipping. The Roma Plenipotentiary Ábelom Ravasz is negotiating a land swap with the commune, but, as this process is lengthy, is asking for a temporary agreement to be found. He stated: “By mutual agreement with the municipality, we have selected the land at the beginning of the municipality, as we want to prevent the segregation of the Roma, but since the situation is critical and needs to be solved quickly, the land should be used for the temporary housing.”
Let’s see and let’s hope there is no landslide and victims in the meantime.

Hungary, Roma, Orban

Published by:

Gabor Varadi, president of the Miskolc Roma local government (in Eastern Hungary) is vehemently protesting against the fact that Orban de-facto qualified Roma as “migrants”. With the demonization of the migrants that has been underway in Hungary, this is very dangerous and definitively discriminatory for people who arrived in the 13th century after all…
