Slovakia: Not here …

Published by:

In recent days, a rumour circulated in Sabinov, a small town north of Kosiče in Eastern Slovakia, about the planned construction of residential homes for up to 2’000 Roma from the by now famous Roma settlement of Lunik IX in Kosiče. This was presented in the town’s website.
Protests immediately occurred … A petition is ongoing to stop the construction.

Slovakia: New Health Program.

Published by:

Roma living in segregated communities suffer from high rates of chronic and infectious diseases, as well as reduced physical and mental (SIC!) performance. In some areas of Slovakia, their life expectancy is 15 years lower than in the majority population. Therefore, the Ministry of Health already launched the Health Promotion Program for the Disadvantaged Communities in Slovakia in 2013, which in 2015 was changed to a program aimed at supporting the improvement of Roma health from segregated areas, especially in the 150 municipalities identified as the least developed. This is stated in the information material submitted by the Minister of Health Tomáš Drucker and the Government has taken note of it at today’s meeting.
A new national program is being set up to continue the work.
How about simply integrating the Roma???

Really???

It seems that Slovakia only sends Roma children for adoption abroad… This can definitively be qualified as state racism. The director of the Centre for International Children and Youth Protection Andrey Císarová, states that “international adoption is recommended by LEN children who have Roma ethnicity and are [thus] not interesting in Slovakia”.

Slovakia, Highways, Roma, and Unemployment Rate

Published by:

This is how not to make statistics … While correlating the unemployment rate and its decrease with the presence of highways, a small paragraph states:

“The most significant impact on the unemployment rate in the regions is the percentage of Roma. This is shown in each research or model. While in Western Slovakia, the Roma represent a low share of the total population, mostly up to 5% (according to the Atlas of the Roma communities), they are around 30% in the Gemer region, and in many other districts of Eastern Slovakia around 20%. We know from microdata that there is about 65% unemployment among Roma.”
