The Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša stated in the National Assembly that they had dealt a lot with Roma issues during this term, especially within a special working group, and that the number of crimes committed by members of the Roma community had decreased.

The fact that he only referenced Roma crimes tells you how people in that country consider Roma.

The Slovenian state wants to bury the Roma killed during World War Two in the central Ljubljana cemetery of Žale, but the cemetery management rejects it, which is unheard of. The victims were killed by Partisan units between 1941 and 1945.

The Council of Europe chided Slovenia in its report on the framework convention on the protection of national minorities and asked the country to do more against hate speech.

The town of Kočevje in Slovenia wants to move Roma to another location as they live in a zone that has been declared a future industrial zone.
Several residents are wary of this and are refusing to move.

The Roma museum of Murska Sobota will given new space in the centre of the city, according to the city’s mayor.

Roma are deprived of health care
According to the President of the Union of Roma of Slovenia Jožko Horvat Muca, the Roma community is deprived of health care. “Roma are still living in often illegal settlements, under bad conditions, without drinking water and electricity. All of this contributes to the poor health situation”.

The President of the Republic, Borut Pahor, met with Roma representatives, the municipalities and the state in what happens to be the biggest consultation on Roma in the Presidential Palace. Purpose was discussing the housing situation of Roma, and the fact that many of them live without electricity, water, and sewers.

Slovenia is said to have made progress in addressing minority issues, but more needs to be done, especially in relation to the Roma community, according to the UN Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues Fernand de Varennes.
