Less news on expulsions, more news, and more reports on the associations fighting for Roma. First, an serious scientific article about the 15 to 20’000 Roma in France (there are more, but as usual, one counts only the ones in the camps). In that context, an exhibition by a Romanian artist in a festival in Western France attempts a dialogue. Then an association in Grenoble that will close down for lack of funds.
This is to be contrasted with potential expulsions in Poissy, in Melun, and one effective camp closure in Créteil, all around Paris. In western France, in Angers, a house is being squatted by Roma and the city’s mayor has been contested for his expulsion policies. Finally, in the North a baby died in a camp.

Even too toxic for the French extreme right party: Frank Sinisi, a FN representative in a town near Grenoble who suggested to take the gold teeth from Roma to cover the costs has been expulsed by the Front National.

Quite a few news in France this week. First, a huge fire in Marseilles nearly totally burnt a Roma camp. Near Paris, Roma are returning to a camp that burnt down last week. In Paris itself, the camp on the tracks of the former petite ceinture railway can stay for another month; near Paris too, a camp that was vacated last week left a mountain of trash. Further south, in Lyon, 145 Roma were expulsed. This is deemed the “largest” camp in Lyon …
In Nice, the concern is on the schooling of the young Roma from the camp – at least a constructive approach!

Things go up and down, very few news this week on Roma in France. This week, the news seem to be centred toward Paris. The holidays are over in France. A lot of news in the press about Roma.
First, near Paris, a new Roma camp was opened on the future site of the Paris St. Germain Football club training site, resulting in many articles; then, the camp on the former train tracks of the Petite Ceinture will again be dismantled (again); near Paris, a camp was dismantled in the Essone; and again near Paris, Roma left a mess behind after having left their camp.
In the North of France, a camp was closed and dismantled near Lille, and another one is “disturbing” the reconstruction of a church. Disturbingly, in the North, an article stating that Roms are Romanian beggars while Travellers are the locals …
Finally, in Western France an illegal camp angers residents and in Angers, Roma will be expulsed for the 24th time!

The trial of the Romanian Roma (and a few others) who picked the pockets of tourists in the Disneyland near Paris (and apparently made 1 Mio EUR) is in full swing. According to the journalist, it is worthy of a Kusturica movie.
The article is good with one exception – the use of “clan” in this context. One family is definitively not a clan – and this term is abused in the European Press in the context of Roma.

A report on pickpockets in Paris’ Disneyland seen through the eyes of Romanians. Quote: “Seven women and five men, most of whom are Roma people from Romania who were sending their children to steal from tourists’ pockets in the Disneyland Paris” This is rather amusing, as it seems that there are also non-Roma who are sending their children to steal …
Anyway, theft is not an ethnic characteristic.

Holidays are over, and Roma are back in the news … In Angers, in Western France, a camp will probably dismantled; in Nantes, the municipality is voting an action plan for Roma; in Salliers; a Nazi Swastika was painted on the site of the former Roma concentration camp; in Montreuil. 13 families are still on the street, one year after having been expulsed; in Paris, on the Porte de la Chapelle, the 35th expulsion (yes) just took place; near Paris, an illegal dump is allegedly created by Roma; in the North, in Lille, people bemoan the insecurity with beggars and others near the railway station; and finally, in Strasbourg, there is a potential case of tuberculosis in a camp.
