Not much about Roma in the French press this week either. A festival in Perpignan, in Southern France showcasing the work of a Romanian photograph, who, sorry to say, perpetuates stereotypes; and the evacuation of one of the oldest Roma camps near Paris, in la Courneuve. The camp was established in 2008. An no one asks why 80 families had to stay there for 16 years …

Very few news this week in France on Roma. The expulsion of 60 Roma who worked in vineyards in the Bordeaux region. Apparently, their fourth expulsion in less than a year. Shame that they cannot be properly lodged. Near Paris, another camp was evacuated, to accommodate the Paris Olympics skatepark.

Not much this week. A fire in a camp in Marseilles, and an old reportage just updated about young Roma who are working with social workers.

Almost nothing this week in France about Rom. Just the story of the closure of a camp near Strasbourg. This story is typical of the way France deals with such things: 120 Roma settled near a highway access ramp in 2019. They slowly built a maeksift camp, and now, the camp has been closed for being insalubrious.

Frankly, it was the case since the beginning. Its inhabitants have yet to be permanetly re-located.

Not much in France this week: An article on the commemoration of August 2nd in the Rivesaltes camp in France. Roma were imprisoned in this camp during World War Two. And finally, the arrestation of three young French who were planning to kidnap and kill two Roma.

Not much about Roma this week in France. Two articles about the expulsion of 50 Roma due to the Paralympics, their camp being on the trade of a competition. A judge has nevertheless put conditions on this expulsion. In Noisy-le-Sec, the evacuation of a camp has been delayed, due to an epidemic situation. Finally, two Romnja have been caught in a burglary and immediately judged.

A reportage in a Roma camp near Marseilles in the South of France. These are not necessarily productive, as they reinforce many stereotypes which are not valid for all Roma. Near Paris, a camp was closed due to the Olympic games, and it seems from another reportage, that besides Roma, others are also displaced due to the Olympics. Finally, an interview with the mayor of a suburb from Nates about an integration camp there.

More news this week on Roma in France, and not all good. First, a man shot and wounded several Roma in a camp near Montpellier. Most probably another racist attack. In Marseilles, three Roma were wounded in a knife attack following a collision. The motive there is unclear.  In Nantes, in Western France, planning has started for the closure of a large Roma camp.  Then, several articles about a catalytic converter theft and traffic network which was dismantled in Romania after a theft committed in Calvados in Western France. This organized criminal group is said to have transported more than 900 catalytic converters through Roma camps in the Paris region.

Well, when there is other news, such as the French elections, Roma vanish from the media. Except in some rightist paper such as the notorious Breizh info.

Besides the title about wasting money on Roma, France has spent a huge amount of money not integrating around 20’000 Roma over the last 20 years. Integration would have been by now much cheaper.

Some more positive news in France this week (at least some …). An association called Rencont’Rom (A French play on rencontres – meetings, and Roma) was funded by the Occitanie Region as part of a project for a more inclusive region. In Grenoble, in the Apls, an Exhibition is trying to counter the stereotypes. The rest is more of the usual. A fire in a Roma camp in Montpellier is the South was probably a criminal act; in Toulouse, tons of garbage on the site of a former Roma camp is partly attributed to them; and finally, in Nantes, in Western France, a tribunal judged the construction of a site for Roma to be illegal.

A few news this week about Roma in France: a 26 year old man has been arrested for the murder of a pregnant Romni in Haute Savoie, close to Geneva. The crime seems to have been racially motivated. Other news are about EU Funds for the integration of Roma and the closure of a camp in Strasbourg.

Unfortunately, the usual news in France about Roma this week. A so-called Transition village near Montpellier in the South of France closed after two years. The fate of the 165 Roma who still were there is uncertain. Other news: Near Nantes, a landowner is trying to get rid of a Roma camp on his lands by himself; another camp near Paris is increasing in size; and near Marseille, a fire in a camp.

The rest of the news are the usual ones: A camp near Strasbourg will be closed and a fire in a camp in Toulouse.

An Article about a Romni

Published by:

A portrait of a young Romni in the Ukraine. She completed her studies. But what is written about Roma in this article is just terrible.

The author has obviously no idea what he (or she) is talking about. In addition, the authors puts in multiple stereotypes. Really bad journalism but unfortunately typical of what one finds in the French press.
