The city of Rome is resorting to bad ideas to “resolve” its issue with Roma camps around the city. They are trying to “convince” the Roma to return and even entice them with 10’000 EUR.
Problem is, these Roma have mostly been in Italy for more than 20 years, if not for much longer. The Italians kept them in camps instead of integrating them. Self-inflicted wound, and what they do is not a solution.

Virginia Raggi is being criticised in relation with the EU funds allocated for the period 2014-2020 to Rome for resolving and integrating Roma. According to the Roma, nothing is being done.

Italy’s top court confirmed the sentence against a man for marrying an underage girl. According to the court, “Underage marriage may be OK for Roma culture but it is against Italian law”.

The Italian National Congress of Roma, Sinti and Travellers protested on the capitol to ask for the administration to close the Castelromano camp and for a real social inclusion plan. The locals complain of extreme conditions in terms of hygiene, with diseases spreading especially among the many children. “We ask the mayor to close immediately Castelromano. Conditions are no longer viable,” said Luigi Hamidovic, representative of the Roma community in Castelromano.

There was a march by Roma on the Capitol Hill on Thursday the 21st of September to protest against the living conditions in the camps into which Italy parks its Roma.

Well, a camp is set to be closed in Italy. But … No places have been set aside to re-lodge the people. And no consultation was done either. It hat is the policies of the five stars movement and the mayor of Rome, Ms. Raggi, this is akin to trying to do some ethnic cleansing.

Roma organisations in Italy protested against the sanitary condition in a camp in Castel Romano. The resident of this camp are exposed to numerous infectious diseases and live in deplorable conditions.
Yet another one of those camps that should have been closed since a long time.

The mayor of Rome, Virgina Raggi, has set up an office whose aim is to monitor and ensure the closure of the Roma camps – long a promise she made during her election. Several Roma associations are waiting to see what is happening.
According to a recent briefing by the Association July 21, “in the face of a constant presence of Roma in informal settlements in Rome quantified in the last five years at around 2,200 / 2,500 housing units, in the last few months the estimate sank to no more than one thousand units. This decline is explained by less arrivals from other countries (Romania), from transfers to other European countries (Spain, France and Germany) and largely from the transition from informal settlements to old unused industrial facilities. In a city with about 2.9 million inhabitants, Roma people in informal settlements account for only 0.03% of the Roma population.”
